Add a work schedule on top for some, and it’s understandable to believe there are not enough hours in the day.

The Shorthorn Editorial Board believes students should use resources on campus as a support system during the transition from summer to fall. Whether students are looking for help in building a sustainable schedule or focusing on personal health, UTA is prepared to assist them.

A healthy work-life balance can help students combat stress at the start of a semester.

The American National University defines work-life balance as prioritizing and allocating time and energy effectively to meet the demands of work, academics and personal life.

Effective time management can be a daunting task to those who don’t know where to start.

American National University suggests that students first look at how they use their time, including their typical sleep schedule, their work hours and how often they find themselves doomscrolling.

Students can become overwhelmed when their schedules begin to spiral out of control. According to Mental Health America, feeling overloaded can make people more vulnerable to health and emotional issues.

The organization, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting mental health in the U.S., states that when students’ schedules become full, self-care and basic needs tend to be on the bottom of the priority list. This can lead to further stress as students focus less on healthy meals, exercise, sleep and relaxation.

Students should instead make specific times in their schedules for these basic needs, rather than trying to fit them into leftover moments.

Once students have evaluated their time use, they should make a to-do list for the week to alleviate mind clutter and make tasks seem more achievable.

Some stress is normal, but students should find ways to healthily cope if it becomes overbearing, according to Mental Health America.

This can be done by creating balance when it comes to work, school and personal life.

American National University recommends that students create balance in their lives by setting priorities, creating boundaries, practicing selfcare, learning to manage time and setting realistic goals.

The university states that by following these practices, students can lead a life with academic achievement, personal fulfillment and professional success.

UTA has resources to help students with these practices, making it easier for students to succeed in creating balance.

Resources for students:

Thrive

Offered by the UT system, Thrive is a free app designed to help students make small changes in their everyday routine. The app focuses on eight topic areas: community, gratitude, self-compassion, mindfulness, mindset, thoughts, moods and purpose.

Division of Student Success

The home of academic resources at UTA, it looks to support students’ academic success.

The department connects students to academic resources and offers tutoring and testing assistance.

Academic support

The Intercultural Student Engagement Center offers academic support for UTA students throughout the semester.

The center offers tutoring, academic advising, coaching and more, allowing students to grow their confidence in their studies.

Students should reward themselves once they have completed something, no matter how small the task may seem. This can include taking breaks, having a snack or simply stepping away.

No matter what students are studying, whether they work during the semester or not, prioritizing their health should hold just as much weight in their schedules as other activities.

The Shorthorn Editorial Board is made up of opinion editor Noah Little, editor-in-chief Taylor Sansom, managing editor Leslie Orozco, news editor James Ward, engagement editor Sairam Marupudi, design editor Ryleigh Hood, associate news editor Diego Collazo and multimedia editor Maricela Gonzales.
