Moviegoers in San Antonio just can’t catch a break.<\/p>\n
The 70mm IMAX projector at\u00a0AMC Rivercenter 11 struggled to play The Odyssey over the weekend, according to an\u00a0Instagram post from content creator Brownsville Today. <\/a>However, there’s reason not to lose hope if you still haven’t seen it in the massive format.<\/p>\n “Drove 4 hours to San Antonio to see The Odyssey in 70mm IMAX and it got CANCELLED,” they wrote. “We tried the 10 PM showing instead\u2026 AND THAT ONE GOT CANCELLED TOO! Apparently there\u2019s an issue with the 70mm IMAX projector.”<\/p>\n Rivercenter’s 70mm IMAX projector is one of only two in Texas and a handful across the globe. Because of the age and rarity of these projectors, they can be prone to technical issues, as many moviegoers experienced here in San Antonio amid The Odyssey’s run and back in 2023 for the release of Oppenheimer.\u00a0<\/p>\n The last time MySA checked in on the theater’s rare 70mm IMAX projector, we were told it was up and running <\/a>after reports of breakdowns during opening weekend. <\/a>Locals and visitors willing to make the trek have been able to watch Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster in the weeks since, seemingly without issue. But because technical difficulties have been happening since the movie dropped in July, MySA reached out to AMC to find out more.<\/p>\n Here’s the good news \u2014\u00a0if you’re planning to catch The Odyssey in its largest format, AMC Rivercenter still seems like\u00a0an option. A spokesperson for AMC told MySA via email that “the IMAX 70mm projector was down briefly for part of the day Saturday, but resumed operations on Sunday and is currently in operation.”<\/p>\n One commenter under Brownsville Today’s post said, “I was at the 2 pm showing Saturday and they tried to play it digitally since the film projector broke but they took almost an hour to calibrate it that I walked out. Ended up seeing it the following morning at the 10 am showing after they fixed the projector.”\u00a0<\/p>\n It remains to be seen how the projector will hold up for Dune: Part Three, which releases in December.
