{"id":1010089,"date":"2026-08-19T04:42:23","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T04:42:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1010089\/"},"modified":"2026-08-19T04:42:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T04:42:23","slug":"houston-considers-18m-in-new-water-meters-amid-resident-billing-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1010089\/","title":{"rendered":"Houston considers $18M in new water meters amid resident billing concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><strong>HOUSTON<\/strong> \u2013 The city of Houston could soon spend nearly $18 million on new water meters \u2014 but some residents say they\u2019re still dealing with the fallout from the last round of meters the city installed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Houston is weighing an $18 million water meter investment, following a KPRC 2 Investigates report in May that revealed some city-installed water meters were faulty or malfunctioning \u2014 causing residents to overpay on their water bills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">One of those residents lives on Fondren Meadows and says she still doesn\u2019t know whether her meter was fixed or replaced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s giving me a headache. We get a high one, we get a low one,\u201d said Berrlyn Nelson, a Houston homeowner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Nelson says her billing troubles began after the city installed a new water meter about a year ago. She says her bill had averaged around $130 a month for the past 20 years before the problems started.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The city issued Nelson credits for the overcharges. For a couple of months in the spring, her balance was $0 \u2014 and then in June and July, her bill averaged between $80 and $100.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cSo I said they finally got it straightened out, but then no, we got a $300 bill.
