The Pittsburgh Steelers released an updated depth chart ahead of their second preseason game on Friday against the New York Jets.<\/p>\n
Mike McCarthy warned against reading too much into preseason depth charts, and very little changed since last week\u2019s<\/a>, but there are a couple of things worth pointing out. The removal of Logan Lee (IR) bumped up Dean Lowry one spot, and Elandon Roberts was added after signing with the team late last week.<\/p>\n Roberts was tacked onto the end of the ILB depth chart for now behind players like Jacoby Windmon, Carson Bruener, and Malik Harrison. If the Steelers keep five inside linebackers, there is a good chance Roberts makes the cut over Harrison. Roberts needs time to hop on the moving train, but perhaps not as much as others, having experience with both the Steelers\u2019 defense and Patrick Graham\u2019s scheme last year with the Las Vegas Raiders.<\/p>\n The depth chart also highlights a couple of the injury issues the Steelers have been having recently. Take, for example, the nickel cornerback depth chart. Jalen Ramsey and Donte Kent are both on Active\/PUP while Brandin Echols has been dealing with an ankle injury since Aug. 6. Doneiko Slaughter, listed as a wide corner on the depth chart, has instead been getting most of those opportunities in their absence.<\/p>\n The wide receiver room is also in an interesting spot heading into Friday\u2019s game. DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. have been dealing with minor injuries, and Mike McCarthy said they would be \u201chard-pressed\u201d<\/a> to return this week. Camp darling Brandon Smith was also nicked up in last week\u2019s game.<\/p>\n That leaves Roman Wilson, Ben Skowronek, and Germie Bernard as the likely starters, with Kaden Wetjen and Max Hurleman the first two off the bench. That combination worked out okay in last week\u2019s game, but will they be consistent enough to help show off young QBs Will Howard and Drew Allar?<\/p>\n Finally, the depth chart doesn\u2019t reflect it yet, but Kaleb Johnson has been relegated to the very bottom of the depth chart at practice and in last week\u2019s preseason opener. He\u2019s still technically listed ahead of Lew Nichols and Travis Homer, but that hasn\u2019t been the reality lately.
