Applying an electric current to your ear for 30 minutes a day could make it feel much easier, scientists have said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Researchers at Queen Mary University and University College London have found that electrically stimulating the vagus nerve, which runs from the brain down through the neck and into the chest and abdomen, could make people\u2019s bodies much more efficient during exercise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">They tested a device that clips to the outer ear to deliver gentle electrical stimulation to the nerve, which has been found to play a role in regulating the function of the heart and other systems in the body.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Illustration of the vagus nerve and its connections to the parasympathetic nervous system.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/\/f65daf38-ea23-4cff-986d-da7077932d4b.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The path of the vagus nerve<\/p>\n<p>ALAMY<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The study, published in the European Heart Journal, found that the device could \u201coffer an inexpensive, safe and scalable approach to improve exercise capacity\u201d. It could be used to \u201cimprove exercise tolerance and promote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/strength-exercises-middle-age-midlife-2xc0g6mpf\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cardiovascular health<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">For the research, 28 people were asked to wear the stimulator for half an hour a day for a week, while the other half wore a dummy device. They then switched for another week, taking part in regular exercise testing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cAfter using the vagus nerve stimulator device for seven days, participants\u2019 oxygen uptake during exercise increased by 4 per cent,\u201d researchers found. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThis was accompanied by improvements in key functional exercise measures, such as their maximum breathing rate, which increased by an average of four breaths per minute, and maximum heart rate, which increased by four beats per minute during exercise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cAs a result, those wearing the stimulator devices were able to exercise more intensely compared to when using the dummy device.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A group of adults jogging on a leaf-strewn trail in autumn.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/\/8dc265f4-eb84-429a-b3ec-e0e8f5768eee.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Increasing vagus nerve activity was found to reduce inflammation<\/p>\n<p>MICHAEL SWALLOW\/GETTY IMAGES<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">They also analysed blood samples and found that those who used the device had lower levels of inflammation in their body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThis suggests that, much like exercise, the use of the device can help reduce inflammation \u2014 the overreaction of the immune system to things like stress, pollution and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/exercise-is-crucial-in-cancer-fight-and-so-much-more-gfvtgxnzz\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">poor diet,<\/a> which can cause damage in the body over time,\u201d the research found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Professor Bryan Williams, the chief scientific and medical officer at the British Heart Foundation, which funded the study, said: \u201cThis early study suggests that a simple technology, which harnesses the connection between the heart and the brain, can lead to improvements in fitness and exercise tolerance. While more research is needed involving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/i-stared-into-void-when-my-heart-raced-after-i-drank-a-smoothie-dbth6t3cq\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">people with cardiovascular disease<\/a>, this could one day be used as a tool to improve wellbeing and quality of life for people with heart failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/want-better-health-less-anxiety-more-sleep-youve-got-a-nerve-r8gfv6fs5\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Want better health, less anxiety, more sleep? You\u2019ve got a nerve<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Professor Gareth Ackland, at Queen Mary, who led the study, said: \u201cMaintaining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/over-50s-health-the-diet-and-exercise-habits-you-need-in-middle-age-lzmnr55kg\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">physical activity<\/a> is essential for every aspect of cardiovascular, emotional and cognitive health. The outcome of the trial is consistent with the significant body of evidence pointing to an important role of the brain in optimising exercise performance and regulating the activity of the immune system, helped by the vagus nerve.<\/p>\n<p id=\"last-paragraph\" class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cWe will need to carry out larger trials to confirm our findings, but the results of this study in healthy volunteers suggest that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/pulsetto-vagus-nerve-stimulation-device-vctnvfxwr\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">increasing vagus nerve activity<\/a> can improve fitness and reduce inflammation, potentially offering new approaches to improve heart health.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Does exercise always feel like hard work, leaving you out of breath with your heart racing?
