{"id":1012980,"date":"2026-08-20T15:05:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T15:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1012980\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T15:05:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T15:05:14","slug":"watermelon-pictures-acquires-diego-lunas-migration-drama-ashes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1012980\/","title":{"rendered":"Watermelon Pictures Acquires Diego Luna&#8217;s Migration Drama Ashes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/watermelon-pictures\/\" id=\"auto-tag_watermelon-pictures\" data-tag=\"watermelon-pictures\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Watermelon Pictures<\/a> has made another splash, acquiring North American rights to migration drama \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/ashes\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ashes\" data-tag=\"ashes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ashes<\/a>,\u201d directed and co-written by Mexican actor, director and producer <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/diego-luna\/\" id=\"auto-tag_diego-luna\" data-tag=\"diego-luna\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Diego Luna<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe deal comes following the film\u2019s world premiere in Cannes and ahead of its bow in Toronto next month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAdapted from the critically acclaimed feminist novel \u201cCeniza en la boca,\u201d published in English as \u201cEating Ashes,\u201d by prominent Mexican author Brenda Navarro, the film follows Lucila, a young woman who leaves Mexico with her younger brother to reunite with their mother in Madrid after years apart. Their hopes for a new beginning quickly collide with a far more difficult reality than Lucila imagined, forcing her to navigate the emotional weight of displacement, fractured family bonds and the struggle to build a life in an unfamiliar country. It stars Anna D\u00edaz (\u201cLa Cocina\u201d) and Adriana Paz (\u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez\u201d), alongside an ensemble cast including Luisa Huertas, Guillermo R\u00edos, Sergio Bautista, Benny Emmanuel, Teresa Lozano and Adriana Jacom\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe \u201cAshes\u201d screenplay was written by Luna, Abia Castillo and Diego Rabasa, with Luna returning to the director\u2019s chair for his atest exploration of family, identity and belonging. The film was produced by Inna Payan, Val\u00e9rie Delpierre, Luis Salinas, Diego Rabasa and Diego Luna.
