Is it <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyhistory.org\/community\/borough-names\">the reality<\/a> of how one of New York City boroughs got its name? No, but as the saying goes, \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=363ZAmQEA84\">When the legend becomes fact, print the legend<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to 2026, and New York City Mayor <b>Zohran Mamdani<\/b> has some big plans for the little island across the harbor from Manhattan. He is hoping to see a 9.5 percent growth in new homes on Staten Island over the next five years, or about 17,675 new homes across the borough, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/wherewelive.cityofnewyork.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Fair-Housing-Growth-Strategy_Draft-Report.pdf\">growth plan<\/a> from the <b>Department of Housing Preservation and Development <\/b>(HPD) released Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/commercialobserver.com\/2026\/08\/new-york-485-x-apartment-limits\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York\u2019s 485-x Is Teaching Developers to Stay Below 100 Apartments at a Time<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the city commits to ambitious housing action through the <a href=\"https:\/\/commercialobserver.com\/2026\/05\/mamdani-housing-plan-reforms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Block by Block plan<\/a>, the draft Fair Housing Growth Strategy provides a framework for measuring need and understanding where we should grow, with fair housing at its center,\u201d <b>Sideya Sherman<\/b>, director of the <b>Department of City Planning<\/b>, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/hpd\/news\/048-26\/hpd-dcp-release-city-s-first-ever-fair-housing-growth-strategy\">said in a statement<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Staten Island is broken up in three segments: North Shore, Mid-Island and South Shore. The South Shore and Mid-Island are the island\u2019s least dense areas. However, residents and elected officials on the South Shore have <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/11\/developer-scraps-controversial-city-of-yes-project-on-staten-island-after-community-backlash.html\">historically pushed back<\/a> on more residential development in their neighborhoods, so the mayor could be facing an uphill battle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStaten Island is probably the most perfect place in the world because you\u2019re 20 or 40 minutes away from the largest city in the country, but at the same time it\u2019s like being in New England,\u201d <b>Stuart Saft<\/b>, a real estate lawyer with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/commercialobserver.com\/company\/holland-knight\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Holland &amp; Knight<\/a><\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/commercialobserver.com\/2026\/01\/staten-island-multifamily-development-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously told Commercial Observer<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve been to Staten Island, and it\u2019s a magnificent place to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mayor isn\u2019t just targeting housing growth on Staten Island over the next five years, mind you.
