{"id":1013658,"date":"2026-08-20T22:28:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T22:28:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1013658\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T22:28:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T22:28:16","slug":"nasa-telescope-doomed-after-flagstaff-companys-rescue-attempt-fails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1013658\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA telescope doomed after Flagstaff company\u2019s rescue attempt fails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\"><b>FLAGSTAFF, AZ (AP\/AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 The mission by a Flagstaff company to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2026\/07\/03\/flagstaff-company-launches-mission-save-nasa-telescope-thats-falling-back-earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2026\/07\/03\/flagstaff-company-launches-mission-save-nasa-telescope-thats-falling-back-earth\/\">save a sinking NASA telescope<\/a> was called off Wednesday, dooming the observatory to a fiery reentry later this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\">NASA and Flagstaff-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katalystspace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.katalystspace.com\/\">Katalyst Space Technologies <\/a>announced the news more than a month after the startup\u2019s Link spacecraft rocketed away on a bid to rescue NASA\u2019s Swift Observatory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Katalyst said Link will not attempt to capture Swift and boost it to a higher orbit because of problems with controlling the spacecraft. NASA said this means the telescope will plunge through the atmosphere after more than 20 years of tracking some of the biggest explosions in the universe like gamma ray bursts and exploding stars. Its demise is not expected before October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">NASA paid $30 million to Katalyst in an attempt to raise the telescope to a safer, longer-lasting orbit. Intense solar activity caused it to lose altitude faster than expected. The rescue spacecraft went into an uncontrollable spin a few weeks after its liftoff in early July. (Sophia Roberts\/NASA via AP)(Sophia Roberts | NASA via AP)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThis is not the outcome we were working toward, but it does not change why this mission was worth attempting,\u201d NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">As a consolation prize, Katalyst will continue to operate Link in proximity with the telescope to demonstrate capabilities for future rescue operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee said it was an ambitious mission on an aggressive timeline that was thrown together in under a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe took on this high-risk, high-reward challenge and are proud of the milestones we reached along the way,\u201d Lee said in a statement. \u201cWe have already learned a tremendous amount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Launched in 2004, Swift\u2019s science instruments were turned off earlier this year to slow its descent. It was orbiting 214 miles (345 kilometers) high as of Wednesday. Katalyst had hoped to lift the telescope back to its original orbit of 373 miles (600 kilometers), allowing for many more years of cosmic observations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">NASA\u2019s Hubble Space Telescope could benefit from an orbital boost and had been next in line for a rescue attempt had this mission gone well. The 36-year-old Hubble is also dropping in orbit because of all the sun\u2019s recent outbursts.
