<\/a>ALBANY, N.Y. \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\nA person has been arrested for allegedly plotting an attack on the New York State Capitol building in Albany.<\/p>\n
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office released a statement announcing the arrest on Thursday afternoon. Hochul said that there are no immediate threats at this time.<\/p>\n
“I\u2019m grateful to the FBI for leading this investigation and to the New York State Police for their work to apprehend this dangerous individual,” the statement read in part.<\/p>\n
The announcement said the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI arrested the person, who was not named, following an investigation.<\/p>\n
WPTZ news partner The Albany Times-Union identified the suspect as Jessica Bowie, 35, of Albany. The Times-Union said court records showed that Bowie allegedly swore allegiance to the terrorist organization ISIS and told a federal confidential informant of her plans to attack the state Capitol.<\/p>\n
She was arrested overnight on Wednesday and had been known to federal investigators after she posted anti-American messages online.<\/p>\n
“Bowie had plotted to use an explosive device to attack the New York State Capitol and the New York State Senators,” said John Sarcone, the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York.<\/p>\n
In July, a confidential informant posed as an ISIS facilitator and communicated with Bowie online, who told them about her plans to attack the Capitol building. The Times-Union said Bowie converted to Islam five years ago and allegedly told the informant that she is an “Islamic State supporter.”<\/p>\n
She was ordered held following a court appearance on Thursday, the Times-Union said. A news conference is expected later Thursday with additional information.<\/p>\n
NY lawmakers react<\/p>\n
NBC5 reached out to North Country Assemblyman Michael Cashman for a comment on the incident. A spokesperson for his office quoted Cashman as saying:<\/p>\n
“The response of the New York State Police and the FBI is another great example of the incredible work the brave men and women in uniform do every day. I thank them for their service, dedication, and swift response to this situation.”<\/p>\n
State Senate Republican leader Rob Ortt, also released a statement, saying in part:<\/p>\n
\u200b”The announcement regarding an ISIS-inspired terrorist plot targeting our State Capitol building is not only disturbing but reinforces why law enforcement at all levels must communicate and work together for the safety and well being of New Yorkers.” <\/p>\n
Assemblyman Matt Simpson also provided a quote to NBC5, saying in part:<\/p>\n
\u201cToday\u2019s news is a scary reminder of the threat of radicalism out there, but I\u2019m grateful to the FBI, New York State Police and our law enforcement partners for their work in stopping this plot before anyone was harmed.”<\/p>\n
State Sen. Dan Stec told NBC5:<\/p>\n
“I think it’s very disturbing that there are people who think like this and are willing to take violent actions. Today is an example that it’s very close to home. My colleagues and I have been saying this for a while \u2014 that law enforcement at all levels should be able to communicate freely with each other. Hats off to the DOJ, FBI and NYSP for getting a hold of this before anything awful happened, but this is an example that we should not be handcuffing law enforcement.”<\/p>\n
