That\u2019s not normal. They\u2019re so common here that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/topic\/Critter_Adventures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/topic\/Critter_Adventures\/\">they have broken into multiple coworkers\u2019 homes<\/a> and have interrupted multiple Tigers games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><b>&#8212;&gt; <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/community\/2019\/07\/01\/thats-nuts-check-out-video-of-a-squirrel-running-around-kimberly-gills-home-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/community\/2019\/07\/01\/thats-nuts-check-out-video-of-a-squirrel-running-around-kimberly-gills-home-2\/\"><b>That\u2019s nuts! They\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/news.jrn.msu.edu\/2020\/11\/black-squirrels-in-michigan-and-elsewhere-could-be-evolution-in-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/news.jrn.msu.edu\/2020\/11\/black-squirrels-in-michigan-and-elsewhere-could-be-evolution-in-action\/\">eastern gray squirrels<\/a> with a mutation that causes their bodies to produce more dark pigment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">They\u2019re found primarily around the Great Lakes, with the highest numbers in Michigan and Ontario.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The mutation <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24534267\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24534267\/\">involves the MC1R gene<\/a> and can result in that jet-black coat. And for some reason, that reverse albino mutation seems to be beneficial to squirrels in Michigan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Scientists think the dark fur may help them absorb more heat during Michigan\u2019s harsh winters. It may also provide better camouflage from predators at night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">And because black squirrels stand out more during the day, they\u2019re more visible to drivers and less likely to become roadkill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">And while folklore <a href=\"https:\/\/squirreluniversity.com\/black-squirrel-meaning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/squirreluniversity.com\/black-squirrel-meaning\/\">has linked them to magic and prophecy<\/a>, science points to something more straightforward: genetics.
