{"id":1014808,"date":"2026-08-21T11:50:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T11:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1014808\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T11:50:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T11:50:17","slug":"us-and-south-korea-wrap-up-ulchi-freedom-shield-drill-6-days-early","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1014808\/","title":{"rendered":"US and South Korea wrap up Ulchi Freedom Shield drill 6 days early"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SEOUL, South Korea (AP) \u2014 The U.S. and South Korean militaries wrapped up their <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-south-korea-drills-north-kim-ea0ab19e6565b1b5ce22143c5b4e9f9d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">annual drill<\/a> six days earlier than initially scheduled on Friday in a conciliatory gesture toward North Korea, though the North said the step isn\u2019t enough to persuade it to return to talks.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier abruptly ordered the Pentagon to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/korea-trump-military-exercises-ae21e0af5ea16f0a74e9a176b3cc2136\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201csubstantially reduce\u201d<\/a> the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise just before it began Monday. Trump cited what he described as a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/4d56f6e8f99d4eefb2f22b7a6dd072d0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">good relationship<\/a> with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korea\u2019s refusal to support him over the war in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>South Korea\u2019s military said the Ulchi Freedom Shield, a command post exercise with the U.S., ended on Friday. <\/p>\n<p>This month\u2019s exercise was initially reportedly scheduled to be held in two phases for 11 days in simulation of North Korean attacks \u2014 the first part until Friday on defensive operations and the second part until Aug. 27 on counteroffensive operations. North Korea is extremely sensitive to the second phase. <\/p>\n<p>South Korea and the U.S. had also planned to hold 14 joint field training exercises during the Ulchi Freedom Shield period. But they\u2019ve agreed to halve them as well, according to South Korea\u2019s military.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea shrugs off Trump\u2019s outreach <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/kim-yo-jong\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kim Yo Jong,<\/a> the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/korea-us-military-drills-313e01e4ee305b4c9b1b8bf12643fb17\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brushed aside<\/a> Trump\u2019s overture on Wednesday, saying that reducing the duration and size of the drills won\u2019t change their \u201cprovocative, aggressive nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next day, North Korea fired about 10 short-range <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-north-korea-projectile-launch-military-exercises-b3af05067e4258f90f67023c7b2b3e9a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ballistic missiles<\/a> toward the sea, apparently following through with its previous threat to respond to the U.S.-South Korean drills that it views as an invasion rehearsal. <\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Pacific Command said the events didn\u2019t pose an immediate threat to U.S. territory or its allies. The command said the U.S. remains committed to the defense of the U.S. homeland and its allies in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Kim Yo Jong\u2019s statement dampened hopes for an early <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-north-korea-kim-apec-a4e1a588eb1786250beac5a5e4e876ec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resumption of talks<\/a> between Trump and Kim Jong Un, whose earlier nuclear <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/c3e17f8d8dbb4d469648e9b280e06c14\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">diplomacy collapsed<\/a> in 2019. Kim Jong Un has used the diplomatic stalemate to increase his leverage by modernizing his nuclear and missile arsenals and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/north-korea-russia-casualties-troops-cf71c682b57863e4e5207d2c86295738\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">aligning with Russia<\/a> over its war against Ukraine. Kim Jong Un suggested last year that he won\u2019t return to talks unless the U.S. drops its demand for North Korean <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/north-korea-trump-kim-good-memories-nuclear-be9f1f41e56914ca07934bf7c50b8237\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">denuclearization as a precondition<\/a> for diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p>Kim Yo Jong still used relatively measured language, avoided typical harsh North Korean rhetoric and touched upon what she called an \u201cexcellent\u201d relationship between her brother and Trump. This suggests North Korea doesn\u2019t want to completely shut the door for future talks and may seek to win bigger U.S. concessions, such as international recognition as a nuclear state and broad sanctions relief. <\/p>\n<p>More nuclear weapons, Russia ties give North Korea greater leverage <\/p>\n<p>With its supply of ammunition and troops to Russia, North Korea is likely receiving economic and military assistance in return, and its expanding <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/north-korea-south-korea-russia-ukraine-war-34716db67af6176d0d5e0ebf1b887881\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ties with Russia<\/a> provides it with leverage to ask for greater support from China, its biggest trading partner. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter this strategic play has run its course, Kim may seek further economic and reputational benefits from Washington,\u201d said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul. \u201cBut that will probably be after the U.S. midterm elections when Trump is expected to be in a weaker domestic political position and in search of headline-grabbing foreign policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kim Dong-yub, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, said that Kim Yo Jong\u2019s statement showed North Korea\u2019s position that a personal relationship between her brother and Trump \u201ccan\u2019t be a factor that moves current North Korean-U.S. relations.\u201d He said Kim Yo Jong likely aimed to head off speculation that Trump\u2019s move can restore diplomacy so as not to fully take the blame when it doesn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n<p>Kim Yo Jong denied Trump\u2019s claim that <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/kim-jong-un\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kim Jong Un<\/a> had responded to his request for a conversation.
