Twin 2-year-old sisters born joined at the head in Brazil died minutes after enduring a fifth grueling surgery to separate them,<\/a> according to a report.<\/p>\n

Little Helo\u00edsa and Helena Batista da Silva\u00a0 \u2014 who shared brain tissue and blood vessels \u2014suffered insufficient blood flow to their organs along with a heart attack in Ribeir\u00e3o Preto Saturday, the UK Sun reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The adorable sisters had just been separated at the end of a 15-hour operation, when their conditions took a turn, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n

One of the twins<\/a> quickly developed low blood pressure while the other suffered high blood pressure.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Helo\u00edsa and Helena, conjoined twins born joined at the head, died on Saturday, August 15, after undergoing a final separation surgery at Hospital das Cl\u00ednicas in Ribeir\u00e3o Preto, Brazil. The two-year-old sisters suffered cardiac and cardiorespiratory arrest following the 15-hour operation. JamPress<\/p>\n

Helena was then reportedly struck by a heart attack at\u00a0 11:12 pm, and Helo\u00edsa then had one 11:26 pm.<\/p>\n

The medical team\u00a0desperately tried to resuscitate them for 25 minutes \u2014\u00a0 but the girls were pronounced dead shortly after, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey had many bouts of pneumonia, they had a tracheostomy, they needed a gastrostomy for feeding, and they had episodes that also weakened their bodies,\u201d said Jayme Farina J\u00fanior, a plastic surgeon on the team.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut at the moment of the final separation, their bodies could not withstand this instability, and then they progressed to cardiac arrest.\u201d<\/p>\n

The twins\u2019 first three surgeries involved doctors separating\u00a0around 75% of their shared brain tissue and blood vessels.<\/p>\n

During the fourth operation, doctors used tissue expanders to increase the amount of skin needed for closing their skulls in the final separation.<\/p>\n

The sisters had successfully completed four surgeries over the past year before the final surgery, which required more than 50 staffers at the hospital.<\/p>\n

Both girls reportedly suffered\u00a0haemodynamic instability, also known as insufficient blood flow to vital organs, which can lead to organ failure and death.<\/p>\n

Their father, Amarildo Batista da Silva, thanked the doctors and hospital staff despite the heartbreaking outcome.<\/p>\n
