If San Diego FC is going to make a serious move up the MLS Western Conference table, the next five matches may decide how realistic that climb becomes.<\/p>\n
Four will be played at Snapdragon Stadium, starting Saturday night against a Colorado Rapids team riding a three-game winning streak. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
San Diego enters the weekend 13th in the West at 6-8-6 with 24 points, four points behind seventh-place Colorado (9-10-1). After this five-match stretch, SDFC will play six of its final nine regular-season games on the road, where points have been considerably harder to find.<\/p>\n
That makes the next few weeks less a favorable stretch than an opportunity San Diego can\u2019t afford to waste.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery game is a final,\u201d coach Mikey Varas said. \u201cAnd accumulating points is the most important thing right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Snapdragon has increasingly become the place where the azul and chrome have done that.<\/p>\n
SDFC has lost just once in its past five Major League Soccer home matches, going 2-1-2 while scoring 13 goals. Add two Leagues Cup victories and San Diego is 4-1-2 in its past seven at Snapdragon across all competitions.<\/p>\n
The road has been another matter.<\/p>\n
San Diego is 2-5-3 away from home in MLS this season and 1-5-2 in its past eight league road matches since April. Its 1-0 victory at LAFC on Aug. 15 snapped a five-month road winless stretch in league play dating to a 1-0 victory at Sporting Kansas City on March 7.<\/p>\n
That made Wednesday\u2019s 3-1 loss at Portland particularly frustrating.<\/p>\n
SDFC had an opportunity to build on the LAFC victory and instead saw its three-game winning streak across all competitions end despite controlling much of the match. San Diego held 65% possession, recorded 45 touches in the Portland penalty area and repeatedly pushed the Timbers onto the back foot.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnce you touch that level, you can\u2019t go back,\u201d Varas said of the standard SDFC showed in its road win against LAFC. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to stay there and take another step forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
Possession has rarely been the problem for Varas\u2019 club. The trouble usually starts when San Diego loses it.<\/p>\n
Portland repeatedly found space in transition, beginning with Kristoffer Velde\u2019s first-half goal after a turnover on SDFC\u2019s side of the field. Gabriel Pirani equalized before halftime \u2014 his first goal for San Diego in his second start \u2014 after a combination with Onni Valakari and Lewis Morgan, but the Timbers struck twice after the break.<\/p>\n
Varas said the issue was both where the turnovers occurred and how his team reacted to them.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have some critical turnovers that we shouldn\u2019t have that leave us a little bit exposed,\u201d Varas said. \u201cBut also, there are certain moments where our positioning and what we call our counter prevention wasn\u2019t organized well enough.\u201d<\/p>\n
That is a dangerous flaw against Colorado.<\/p>\n
The Rapids arrive having won three straight MLS matches and four of their past five, including Wednesday\u2019s 1-0 victory over LAFC. Colorado has allowed only one goal in five matches since the World Cup break and has recorded four clean sheets during that span. Its four consecutive home shutouts are the second-longest such streak in club history.<\/p>\n
Colorado has been less dominant away from Commerce City, but its formula travels: stay compact, force mistakes and make opponents pay for them.<\/p>\n
That is exactly where SDFC must be cleaner.<\/p>\n
Varas said his team continues to control large stretches of matches and consistently reaches dangerous areas. The next step is producing \u201ca higher volume of clearer chances and finishing\u201d while being better organized to stop counterattacks before they develop.<\/p>\n
San Diego\u2019s attack should receive a significant boost with the return of Anders Dreyer, who missed the Portland match while serving a red-card suspension. The 2025 MLS Newcomer of the Year has eight goals and nine assists this season, while Marcus Ingvartsen leads SDFC with 11 goals and four assists.<\/p>\n
Newcomer Elias Achouri could have a larger role as well. The Tunisian winger has come off the bench in his first two MLS appearances, including 32 minutes in Portland. Varas said San Diego is close to identifying its preferred attacking combination as Achouri, Hirving \u201cChucky\u201d Lozano\u2019s replacement at designated player, builds fitness and chemistry with his new teammates.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would say we\u2019re 90% there,\u201d Varas said. \u201cWe know where we\u2019re sharpest at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Colorado has its own threats in Rafael Navarro, who has scored 10 goals in 20 appearances, and Paxten Aaronson, who has four goals and six assists. Both are capable of exploiting the kind of transition moments that hurt SDFC in Portland.<\/p>\n
San Diego doesn\u2019t need a reminder.<\/p>\n
Colorado beat SDFC 1-0 exactly one month before Saturday\u2019s rematch when defender Lo\u00efc Williams scored deep into stoppage time on July 22 at Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods Park.<\/p>\n
That match was played at altitude, where San Diego adopted a more cautious approach. Center back Manu Duah expects something considerably more aggressive at Snapdragon.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow they\u2019re coming to our home,\u201d Duah said. \u201cWe\u2019re not going to give them too much time on the ball. We\u2019re just going to go press.\u201d<\/p>\n
Home has increasingly been where SDFC looks most comfortable.<\/p>\n
