The shooting took place at 345 Park Avenue, beginning in the lobby and ending on the 33rd floor, which is owned by real estate firm Rudin Management. The building is also home to the global headquarters of asset manager Blackstone, the National Football League, and other companies.<\/p>\n
In a press conference, Mayor Eric Adams called the shooting an \u201cact of evil\u201d and condemned gun violence, which he said \u201chas scarred so many neighbors and ripped apart too many families across this entire country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s what we know so far.<\/p>\n
What happened?<\/p>\n
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch recounted during the Monday evening press conference what authorities\u2019 investigation, which remains ongoing, has revealed so far.<\/p>\n
Tisch said that at 6:28 p.m., a 911 call center received multiple calls for an active shooter situation at 345 Park Avenue.<\/p>\n
Surveillance video, Tisch said, showed that a lone male exited a double-parked black BMW outside the building between 51st and 52nd streets. He carried an M4 assault rifle in his right hand and entered the building\u2019s lobby, where he opened fire on and killed an NYPD officer and a woman who was taking cover. He \u201csprayed\u201d the lobby with gunfire, Tisch said, wounding another man, as he proceeded to the elevator. Near the elevator bank, he shot a security guard before letting a woman exit the elevator unharmed.<\/p>\n
The elevator carried the shooter to the 33rd floor, where he walked around, \u201cfiring rounds as he traveled,\u201d Tisch said. One additional woman was struck and killed. Then the shooter walked down a hallway and shot himself in the chest.<\/p>\n

Adams and Tisch identified the police officer who was killed as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant who was a three-and-a-half-year veteran of the NYPD and served in the 47th precinct. Islam was working \u201cpaid detail,\u201d which refers to a program in which private organizations can hire uniformed and armed off-duty officers for security, at the building when the shooting took place.<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person who believed in God,\u201d Adams said of Islam, adding that he had met with Islam\u2019s family. \u201cHe\u2019s a true blue New Yorker, not only in the uniform he wore but in his spirit and energy of loving this city.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tisch said Islam was married and had two boys, and his wife was pregnant with their third child. \u201cHe put himself in harm\u2019s way. He made the ultimate sacrifice,\u201d she said. \u201cHe died as he lived: a hero.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tisch said the other deceased victims\u2019 names\u2014identified initially only as one other man and two women\u2014were being withheld pending family notification. The \u201clone shooting survivor\u201d is a male who, as of Monday night, is in \u201ccritical but stable\u201d condition.<\/p>\n
What do we know about the suspected shooter?<\/p>\n
Tisch identified the suspected shooter as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, a resident of Las Vegas, Nev.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cHis motives are still under investigation, and we are working to understand why he targeted this particular location,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Initial investigation, Tisch said, shows that Tamura\u2019s vehicle traveled cross-country, through Colorado on July 26, then Nebraska and Iowa on July 27 and then in Columbia, N.J., as recently as Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Inside the vehicle, which was registered in Tamura\u2019s name, officers found a rifle case, additional ammunition, a loaded revolver, a backpack, and prescription medication.<\/p>\n
Tisch said Tamura had a \u201cmental health history,\u201d according to Las Vegas authorities. The FBI said that \u201cinitial checks\u201d of its systems did not reveal any information about the subject.<\/p>\n
Tisch said Tamura had a license in the state of Nevada, and officials told CNN<\/a> that he had a concealed carry permit for a handgun and an expired private investigator license in Nevada.<\/p>\n Tisch reiterated that the shooter was believed to have acted alone and that there is no longer an active threat to the public.<\/p>\n Did Tamura target the NFL?<\/p>\n \u201cOne of our employees was seriously injured in this attack,\u201d NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a memo to the league\u2019s staff, ESPN reported<\/a>. Goodell added that all other employees are safe and accounted for and that there will be \u201cincreased security presence\u201d at the office \u201cin the days and weeks to come.\u201d<\/p>\n Authorities are reportedly<\/a> investigating whether Tamura targeted the NFL, which has headquarters on the fifth floor of 345 Park Avenue, after papers were found on his body that indicated he had grievances with the league over its handling of chronic traumatic encephalopathy<\/a>, or CTE, a neurodegenerative disease associated with head trauma.<\/p>\n Tamura played high school football<\/a> when he was younger and was described as a \u201cstandout running back\u201d in a video from 2015<\/a>.<\/p>\n Sources told the New York Post<\/a> that Tamura\u2019s note blamed the sport for his own struggles with CTE and requested that his brain be studied.<\/p>\n CTE, according to Harvard Medical School<\/a>, can only be diagnosed through a postmortem brain examination. A study last September found that 1 in 3 former NFL players believed they had the condition, which has been linked with suicidality.<\/p>\n How are New Yorkers reacting?<\/p>\n A number of prominent politicians of both parties have expressed grief over the incident. Several Democrats have called for more attention to addressing gun violence.<\/p>\n Zohran Mamdani<\/a>, a state assemblyman and the Democratic nominee in the city\u2019s upcoming mayoral election, posted<\/a> on X that he was \u201cheartbroken\u201d after learning of the shooting. Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat who is running as an independent candidate in the mayoral race, posted<\/a> that he was \u201chorrified\u201d by the shooting. Both said they were \u201cgrateful\u201d to the first responders.<\/p>\n \u201cThank you to our brave first responders on the scene in Manhattan tonight,\u201d Chuck Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader, posted<\/a> on X. \u201cI\u2019m praying for everyone affected. We must do more to stop gun violence in America.\u201d Kirsten Gillibrand, the state\u2019s other senator who is also a Democrat, posted<\/a> that her \u201cprayers\u201d were with Islam\u2019s family and the \u201centire first responder community.\u201d<\/p>\n Rep. Jerrold Nalder, a Democrat who represents New York\u2019s 12th congressional district that contains 345 Park Avenue, posted<\/a>: \u201cGun violence in this country is an epidemic. The tragic loss of a brave police officer and innocent civilians is far too common. From Columbine to Sandy Hook, from the Tree of Life synagogue to the Pulse nightclub, from Charleston to today\u2019s shooting in Midtown Manhattan, we must put an end to the easy access to weapons of war that continue to take innocent lives.\u201d<\/p>\n Hakeem Jeffries, the House Minority Leader and a representative of New York\u2019s 8th congressional district, posted<\/a> that he was \u201cdeeply disturbed\u201d by the shooting and \u201cpraying hard\u201d for the victims. \u201cMay God watch over our city during this challenging moment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat who represents New York\u2019s 14th congressional district, posted<\/a> that her \u201cheart goes out to the victims, their families, and everyone impacted.\u201d<\/p>\n Rep. Dan Goldman, a Democrat who represents New York\u2019s 10th congressional district, described the incident as \u201cyet another random shooting.\u201d In a post on X, he said<\/a>: \u201cWhile we await more details, let\u2019s just remember that the U.S. is the only country with this kind of gun epidemic.\u201d<\/p>\n Rep. Ritchie Torres, a Democrat who represents New York\u2019s 15th congressional district, posted<\/a> that the shooting was a \u201cshocking act of terror\u201d and a \u201cgrim reminder of the persistent danger posed by firearms, the hardening of hatred in our society, and the exceptional courage of the NYPD officers who risk their lives in order to protect the rest of us.\u201d<\/p>\n Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican who represents New York\u2019s 11th congressional district, posted<\/a> that she was \u201cheartbroken\u201d to learn of the victims who were \u201cmurdered\u201d by a \u201cmadman.\u201d She added that she would join her \u201cfellow New Yorkers in praying for a speedy recovery for those critically injured.\u201d<\/p>\n Rep. Claudia Tenney, a Republican who represents New York\u2019s 24th congressional district, posted<\/a> that her team is \u201cactively monitoring\u201d the shooting and that her \u201cprayers are with the officer and civilians impacted in this horrific attack.\u201d<\/p>\n Talk radio host Rob O\u2019Donnell, a former NYPD detective and board member of the Pipe Hitter Foundation that advocates for service members and first responders, suggested that gun control measures are ineffective, posting on X<\/a>: \u201cThe NYC Shooting suspect broke about 5 laws simply by entering New York. Tell me again how these mindless gun laws that do nothing to prevent criminals intent on committing violent crimes work?\u201d<\/p>\n KPMG, a multinational accounting firm with offices in the building where the shooting took place, said in a statement issued to multiple media outlets: \u201cOur hearts go out to the victims of this horrific act and their families. We are incredibly grateful for the bravery of building security and law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n Unfounded conspiracy theories about the shooting have spread on social media, including by Laura Loomer, a right-wing conspiracy theorist with influence in the Trump Administration, that the shooter shouted \u201cFree Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n
