Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch promised that Jewish institutions across the Big Apple will \u201cnot be left to protect themselves\u201d against rising antisemitism as she delivered remarks at Central Synagogue Friday \u2014 one week after the violent, hate-filled attack on the place of worship. <\/a><\/p>\n

Tisch, who grew up attending the synagogue on Lexington Avenue and East 55th Street, vowed continued police support and action for Jewish New Yorkers, many of whom witnessed Larry Montes, 46, unleash a horrific, antisemitic assault during Shabbat last week.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened here is unacceptable anywhere in this city. No New Yorker should be assaulted or threatened<\/a> because of who they are or how they worship,\u201d Tisch told the packed congregation.<\/p>\n

\u201cA hate crime such as this is a message written in violence,\u201d the commissioner slammed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe physical wound is inflicted upon one person, but the fear is intended for an entire community,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is meant to tell everyone who shares the victim\u2019s identity that they do not belong, that they are vulnerable, that they should be afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tisch promised Jewish institutions across the Big Apple will \u201cnot be left to protect themselves\u201d against antisemitism \u201cwithout a partner in the NYPD.\u201d Central Synagogue<\/p>\n

Tisch stressed \u201cthat message lands with particular force in the Jewish community\u201d as \u201cfor years now, Jewish New Yorkers have accounted for roughly half of the city\u2019s confirmed hate-crime victims, despite making up approximately 10% of its population.\u201d<\/p>\n

As of August, hate crimes against Jewish New Yorkers so far this year increased 8.5% <\/a> \u2014 with a concerning 53.3% increase in antisemitic hate crimes in July 2026 compared to July 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that violence can inspire more violence. Every high-profile attack raises the risk of another,\u201d Tisch added.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndividuals already on the edge do not always need instructions,\u201d she said. \u201cSometimes, all they need is a spark.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is why we take threats seriously, and why we work aggressively to intervene before hatred becomes violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

The police commissioner asserted that her job, and that of the NYPD, \u201cis to act\u201d and that the department \u201cstands behind this work\u201d combatting antisemitic hate crimes across the city \u2014 with precinct commanders and community affairs officers working with synagogues and yeshivas, \u201cdoing everything we can to ensure their safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NYPD \u201cIntelligence and Counterterrorism Bureau acts aggressively against potential threats and directs resources where they are needed,\u201d she asserted. <\/p>\n

Tisch vowed that \u201cJewish institutions will not be left to protect themselves without a partner in the NYPD.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJewish families will not be told to accept fear as the price of practicing their faith,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

The commissioner promised as a \u201cproud Jew\u201d and \u201clifelong member\u201d of the Central Synagogue congregation, \u201cyou have my word that I stand with you in these uncertain, precarious times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tisch said the NYPD\u2019s commitment to protecting Jewish New Yorker\u2019s is \u201cprofessional\u201d and \u201chere at Central, it is also deeply personal.\u201d Youtube\/Central Synagogue<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd as Police Commissioner, you have my word that behind that commitment stand 35,000 members of the NYPD willing to risk their own lives for people they have never met, supported by the most robust municipal counterterrorism capacity in the world and a Hate Crimes Task Force that is second to none,\u201d she promised.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, that commitment is professional,\u201d Tisch added. <\/p>\n
