It was nearly named the New Blaine Theatre, in honor of Blaine Elementary School across Southport Avenue and slightly to the north. The theater was squarely in the exhibition vanguard then, designed and equipped as a boutique-size 750-seat alternative to the massive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/A-qs9KXz_Nb0YDmJtq3KwjwZoxEU00GJPXZfZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gBy83UheGeIXLO56oWxWAOpwMuMw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/enews.chicagotribune.com\/q\/A-qs9KXz_Nb0YDmJtq3KwjwZoxEU00GJPXZfZcOJa2pydW1vcmVAZ21haWwuY29tw4gBy83UheGeIXLO56oWxWAOpwMuMw&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1755888163404000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2oJYc8yzA9HsUHJd8WUM8p\">Balaban<\/a> &amp; Katz auditoriums of the day. (The Chicago Theatre was the flagship.)<\/p>\n<p>The Music Box wasn\u2019t a vaudeville house with movie capabilities. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1982:<\/strong> The Chicago Cubs <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-mr-cub-ernie-banks-n\/179404148\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retired<\/a> Hall of Famer Ernie Banks\u2019 No. 14 jersey. <a href=\"https:\/\/baseballhall.org\/hall-of-famers\/banks-ernie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cMr. Cub\u201d<\/a> became the first to have his jersey retired by the team. Banks is the all-time franchise leader in games played (2,528), at-bats (9,421) and total bases (4,706). (Erin Hooley\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2021:<\/strong> Columbia University student Miguel Cisneros, 19, drowned after jumping off Pratt Pier in the Rogers Park neighborhood for a swim.<\/p>\n<p>After Cisneros died, Rogers Park residents<b>\u00a0<\/b>took it upon themselves to place life rings \u2014 at least four \u2014 on the pier. Each time, the Park District removed the rings. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/breaking\/ct-rogers-park-life-rings-drowning-20210910-xxzohwlxjvgtdfhm3ddeksnvdy-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/breaking\/ct-rogers-park-life-rings-drowning-20210910-xxzohwlxjvgtdfhm3ddeksnvdy-story.html\">Cisneros\u2019 mother, Maria Diaz, called for life rings to be placed at the pier and across the lakefront.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"oaWKFZsQZi\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/09\/13\/life-rings-installed-at-pier-where-19-year-old-drowned\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Life rings installed at pier where 19-year-old drowned<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Park District <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/09\/13\/chicago-park-district-reverses-position-and-installs-life-ring-at-rogers-park-pier-where-19-year-old-drowned\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">placed a life ring<\/a> at Pratt Pier in September 2021, reversing a previous announcement. (Erin Hooley\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also in 2021:<\/strong> The Cubs set a franchise record with the team\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-unfriendly-confines-chi\/179406664\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">13th consecutive home loss<\/a> in a 9-1 defeat at the hands of the Kansas City Royals at Wrigley Field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListen, it\u2019s no fun to lose,\u201d manager David Ross said after the game. \u201cIt\u2019s like nobody is having a good time.
