The city of Fort Worth\u2019s stormwater management team is nearing completion of a five-year update to the city\u2019s Floodplain Management Plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n The group held its second and final public meeting Aug. 13 before sending the plan to the Federal Emergency Management Agency<\/a> for feedback ahead of possible city council adoption in December.<\/p>\n The FMP is a 10-step strategy that sets out measures to manage floodplains. The plan\u2019s goal is to reduce flood risk, protect property and life, and maintain environmental values.<\/p>\n FEMA\u2019s Community Rating System, which is used as the basis for calculating flood insurance rates, requires periodic updates of communities\u2019 floodplain management practices.<\/p>\n The team held two public meetings and three stakeholder meetings to gather public feedback on managing flood risk in the city. Stakeholders included city employees, residents and experts.<\/p>\n Among the main goals developed for the stakeholders during the first meeting: improve outreach, education and communication, help residents, and encourage conversations about how the city can help improve its stormwater regulations.<\/p>\n While researching, the team coordinated with other agencies including the North Central Texas Council of Governments and Tarrant Regional Water District. It also identified where most of Fort Worth\u2019s flooding is and assessed the impact of heavy floods on Fort Worth.<\/p>\n The team determined its top goal would be to \u201cimprove the safety of people, property and infrastructure by reducing flood risk and impacts.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a0Other goals include:<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n The team developed six plan categories aimed at educating the public and improving technological support regarding potential flood risks.
