At Comic-Con, I overheard a heated discussion between a former Marvel executive and a prominent Hollywood VFX artist. <\/p>\n

The two were in full agreement: the blame for the MCU\u2019s current problems lies squarely with Disney\u2014not the creatives or execs that were already at Marvel.<\/p>\n

While I didn\u2019t catch every detail, they were pretty livid about Disney ruining the MCU, and the takeaway was clear: that they backed James Gunn\u2019s recent comments that Disney corporate is to blame for the issues with the MCU.<\/p>\n

Gunn Blames Disney for Marvel\u2019s Decline<\/p>\n

In a recent Rolling Stone interview<\/a>, James Gunn addressed the decline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and didn\u2019t hold back. He said Disney\u2019s push for more content\u2014especially during the streaming boom\u2014stretched Marvel beyond its limits.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd [longtime Marvel executive producer] Louis [D\u2019Esposito] said that privately to me\u2026 That wasn\u2019t fair. It wasn\u2019t right. And it killed them,\u201d said Gunn.<\/p>\n

Rolling Stone noted that Marvel insiders have acknowledged the misstep, with too many movies and shows pushed out in too short a time.<\/p>\n

Gunn Clarifies: They Were Screwed by the System<\/p>\n

After fans reacted to his \u201ckilled them\u201d comment, Gunn clarified on Threads that he didn\u2019t mean Marvel was finished, just that the system they were caught in was broken.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sacrifice-everything-for-streaming craze killed many good things by forcing a demand for \u2018content\u2019 that couldn\u2019t possibly be met,\u201d said Gunn.<\/p>\n

Gunn said Marvel is now on the other side of that phase, but the damage was done.<\/p>\n

DC Will Avoid the Same Mistakes<\/p>\n

Gunn made it clear that the new DC Studios won\u2019t repeat Marvel\u2019s mistakes. He said there\u2019s no quota to fill, and that every movie and show must earn its place.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have the mandate to have a certain amount of movies and TV shows every year\u2026 Everything we put out will be what we think is of the highest quality,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that nothing gets made unless he\u2019s personally satisfied with the script.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing goes before there\u2019s a screenplay that I personally am happy with,\u201d said Gunn.<\/p>\n

Disney Slashes Marvel Budgets, Pulls Back on Content<\/p>\n

Kevin Feige and Disney CEO Bob Iger have both confirmed that Marvel is pulling back on content. <\/p>\n

Feige recently stated that future MCU Disney+ shows won\u2019t directly connect to the movies, and vice versa. <\/p>\n

On top of that, Disney has slashed the budgets for its Marvel streaming series following the big failures of shows like Secret Invasion, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel. <\/p>\n
