New York City police officer<\/a> was who killed by a gunman in a Manhattan office building immigrated to the U.S. from Bangladesh and left behind a pregnant wife, authorities said.<\/p>\n\nDidarul Islam, 36, had been on the force for four years before he was gunned down Monday evening. He was a married father to two young boys and his wife is pregnant with their third child, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.<\/p>\n
Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh who was assigned to the NYPD’s 47th Precinct in the Bronx, was one of two uniformed officers in the Park Avenue high-rise when the shooting occurred.<\/p>\n
“He put himself in harms way,” Tisch said. “He made the ultimate sacrifice.”<\/p>\n
“He died as he lived: a hero,” she added.<\/p>\n
Both of the officers were working there as part of the paid detail program, which allows companies to hire uniformed officers as extra security, Tisch said.<\/p>\n
New York Mayor Eric Adams, a former NYPD officer, said he met with Islam’s family.<\/p>\n
