Central Elections Committee Chairman Justice Noam Solberg issued on Sunday an interim order for the haredi (ultra-Orthodox) Shas Party to remove its recently published election campaign video, which appears to support IDF conscription amid controversy over the party’s stance.<\/p>\n

The decision from Solberg came after the Yashar Party, led by Gadi Eisenkot<\/a>, demanded the video’s removal on Sunday, alleging that it violated election propaganda legislation.<\/p>\n

The interim order will remain in place for two days, during which Shas Party leader Arye Deri is required to respond to allegations, the Central Elections Committee stated. It added that the video allegedly violated two provisions of the Elections Law concerning election propaganda.<\/p>\n

The Shas campaign video was subsequently removed after the interim order was issued. \u00a0The video featured a family gathered for a Shabbat dinner before a son was seen returning home from his army base and embracing his family members.<\/p>\n

Upon releasing the video, Shas<\/a> stated that the video was of an Israeli family in which one son studies at a yeshiva while his brother serves in the IDF, with “each contributing to the people of Israel in his own way.”<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the story of the Shas family: faith, tradition, unity, and love of Israel \u2013 Torah scholars and IDF soldiers, we are all one family,” the party added.<\/p>\n

The video ends by stating that “more than 30,000 soldiers and career-service personnel voted for the Shas Party in the last election.”<\/p>\n

Yashar demands video be removed for violating Elections Law<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Yashar Party demanded that the video be removed by 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, stating that the video was campaign propaganda and that its publication violated the Elections Law by “creating the impression that the IDF identifies with the Shas Party.”<\/p>\n

In a warning letter sent to Shas Party leader MK Arye Deri<\/a> through Yashar\u2019s attorney, the party said the demand was a preliminary measure before taking further action.<\/p>\n

Yashar\u2019s letter disputed Shas\u2019s claims, pointing out that the video \u201cexplicitly claims that \u2018more than 30,000 soldiers and career-service personnel voted for the Shas Party in the last election, according to official data,’ and that \u201cthe use of IDF soldiers in election propaganda is particularly outrageous given Shas\u2019s policies throughout the three years of war.\u201d<\/p>\n

“The party [Shas] has worked to promote a draft-evasion law and to give absolute preference to those who chose not to serve, while those who do serve bear the burden of the war. It also notes that party chairman Aryeh Deri has previously said that he is proud of family members who do not serve,” Yashar stated.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot promote draft evasion at the expense of those who serve, take pride in those who do not serve, and then use IDF soldiers as a backdrop for election propaganda,” Yashar added.<\/p>\n

Shas responded to Yashar by further backing its campaign video, stating the video was aimed at “refuting the false propaganda, including from Eisenkot and his party, claiming that Shas supports draft evasion.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to the Central Election Committee’s interim order to remove the video, Shas accused the Left of spreading “propaganda against Shas on the issue of military enlistment.”<\/p>\n

Eisenkot is a leading candidate in the opposition bloc seeking to replace Prime Minister Netanyahu in the upcoming elections.<\/p>\n

Shas has been a key partner in Netanyahu\u2019s coalition. Throughout the government\u2019s term, haredi party leaders have pushed for legislation that critics argue would not increase haredi conscription amid the IDF’s severe manpower crisis.<\/p>\n

Shas criticized over stance on haredi IDF draft<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shas has received increasing criticism over its stance regarding ultra-Orthodox enlistment<\/a> ahead of the October 27 elections. Haredi party leaders have sought to advance legislation that opponents argue would not increase haredi enlistment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The haredi parties also boycotted votes on coalition legislation when their controversial legislation was not advancing quickly enough.<\/p>\n

Two contentious pieces of legislation that were sponsored by the haredi parties and passed their final readings in the Knesset last month were the bill to enshrine Torah study as a fundamental value in the country\u2019s Basic Law, along with a bill to temporarily freeze the arrests of haredi draft evaders.<\/p>\n
