Richardson earned her certification from the vocational program at Grapevine’s The Gatehouse, a nonprofit residential community program designed to help women become self-sufficient.

In conversation now, Richardson seems confident and prepared to tackle any hardships. That was not the case about two years ago when she got evicted from her apartment and was living in her car before she found her way to The Gatehouse.

For much of this change, she credits the Grapevine organization and particularly its new vocation track.

Ariel Richardson credits The Gatehouse with her new career path. (Courtesy | The Gatehouse)

The program gives participants up to 18 months to finish their education while living on The Gatehouse campus. They then can stay in the program an additional year of support as they begin their careers and move toward self-sufficiency, said Chelsea Hinman, chief program officer.

The length of stay at The Gatehouse campus for the vocation track is up to two and a half years. This residential program gives eligible single women rent-free housing while they complete a trade, vocational program or STEM associate degree.

The Gatehouse operates from a 61-acre campus with 96 apartments. The organization provides housing, childcare, financial coaching, counseling and other services designed to remove barriers and help participants build a stable future.

In 2023, the nonprofit launched its education track, designed to help single mothers complete their college bachelor’s or master’s degrees.

The vocation track was added in April 2025 as a response to changes that were taking place in the Texas workforce, said Hinman. Nearly half of job openings in Texas are now middle-skill roles similar to Richardson’s, positions requiring education beyond high school, according to the Texas Workforce Commission and Texas 2036, a nonpartisan public policy think tank founded by Dallas attorney Tom Luce.

The think tank’s 2026 report, The Next Generation of the Texas Miracle, shows that postsecondary credentials earned in high school have increased 532% since 2018.

Those trends were already occurring in the workplace, but the pandemic really exposed them, Hinman said.

“When COVID happened, not only were we seeing the impacts on our community with job losses and furloughs, but also the loss of childcare with childcare locations closing and school districts going to remote learning,” she said. “Suddenly there were additional barriers that were presenting themselves during that time.”

The increase in the cost-of-living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area was also a factor, said Hinman.

“Suddenly many entry-level jobs couldn’t provide enough (income) to cover most apartments, so we needed to find a way to help these women upgrade their skills,” she said.

In response to those trends, The Gatehouse launched the vocation track designed for women looking to earn a professional certification. The mikeroweWORKS Foundation partnered with The Gatehouse to launch the $200,000+ scholarship program.

Founded in 2015 by Lisa Rose and her husband, former BNSF CEO Matt Rose — with an initial grant from the Rose Family Foundation and support from private donors, foundations and corporations — The Gatehouse has helped over 900 women through its education, training and support programs.

And support was what Richardson needed. She already had the drive.

Even though she came from a challenging background, Richardson was on her way to earning her certification as a consultant for nursing mothers when her apartment building caught fire. She had carefully budgeted her living expenses in order to take a pay cut required for an internship needed for her hoped-for career.

Afterward, she could only find more expensive accommodations, which led to her eviction. She credits a bit of divine intervention — or her phone overhearing her conversations — for showing her an ad on Instagram for The Gatehouse. Richardson can recite the ad almost word-for-word.

“It said, ‘Are you pursuing a career? Are you trying to get ahead?’ I mean, it was me. That ended up opening the door for me to be able to do this,” she said.

Once she was accepted into the program, Richardson had a place to stay while she worked on her certification. However, her earlier eviction could have blocked her from finding an apartment after her time at The Gatehouse was over.

“They helped me clear that up, too, so I could then find housing after I left,” she said.

Richardson said she began to develop a newfound confidence after the string of setbacks.

“I credit that with being able to find a company to hire me here, an Austin-based company, but they hired me as their first Dallas-Fort Worth area employee,” she said.

Bob Francis is business editor for the Fort Worth Report.
