Gabriel Pirani added a third in the 71st minute to complete the rout.

The game was very similar to the reverse fixture that ended in Colorado’s favor just a few weeks ago. Neither team really threatened on the attack. The difference was two critical back-end mistakes by Rapids defender Rob Holding.

The first came in the 27th minute when a pass back from Rapids defender Reggie Cannon was controlled very poorly by Holding, and the ball leaked through his legs straight to Valakari. It was an easy finish for Valakari against Rapids goalkeeper Nico Hansen, who didn’t put a foot wrong all game.

The second goal came just nine minutes later, in the 36th minute. Rapids defender Loïc Williams stopped an attack from San Diego and Rapids midfielder Hamzat Ojediran appeared ready to put his foot through the ball to clear it out of the box before Holding came rushing in, not only getting in the way of Ojediran’s clearance, but pushing the ball directly into Achouri’s path. The finish was just as easy as the first one, and a bad evening got worse for Holding.

“My frustration tonight is the performance from conceding the first goal until halftime,” Rapids head coach Matt Wells said. “Body shape, angles of support, you’re playing a style of play with imperfect habits.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="Rafael Navarro #9 of the Colorado Rapids and Manu Duah #26 of the San Diego FC fight for the ball during the second half at Snapdragon Stadium on August 22, 2026 in San Diego, California. (Photo by Denis Poroy/Getty Images)

Neither team had many clear-cut opportunities throughout the match, aside from Colorado’s two mistakes. Neither team eclipsed one expected goal, aside from the mistakes. Without the Holding errors, the game would have looked a lot like the reverse fixture that ended with the Rapids coming out on top.

The next best chance for either side was again for the hosts, and it was the dagger in a largely disappointing display from the Rapids.

In the 71st minute, Colorado had to push more and more numbers forward and paid for it with a San Diego counterattack. The pair of Pirani and Marcus Ingvartsen was unimpeded on their foray towards the Rapids box. They made it look easy as a simple one-two between them created too much space within the Rapids box. Holding was yet again left looking helpless as he opted to mark space rather than a San Diego player.

The Rapids were due a stinker. The game from start to finish wasn’t on par with how Colorado has played since returning from the World Cup break. The Rapids only lost once in five games, and it was a screamer against St. Louis while down a man. The usually stout defense was at fault for too many goals, and the usually dormant offense didn’t pick up the slack.

The Rapids will look to regroup with rival Real Salt Lake coming to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. for the final leg of the Rocky Mountain Cup.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="Aníbal Godoy #20 of the San Diego FC shoots past Nico Hansen #41 of the Colorado Rapids during the first half at Snapdragon Stadium on August 22, 2026 in San Diego, California.
