{"id":1019610,"date":"2026-08-23T19:51:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T19:51:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1019610\/"},"modified":"2026-08-23T19:51:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T19:51:18","slug":"txdot-drops-speed-limit-of-highway-sh-361-after-deadly-crashes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1019610\/","title":{"rendered":"TxDOT drops speed limit of highway SH 361 after deadly crashes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Texas highway will get a lower speed limit in the coming days, following an announcement by the Texas Department of Transportation on Friday, August 21, over safety concerns in\u00a0the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>TxDOT officials took to social media to announce beginning Tuesday, August 25, &#8220;As part of the Texas Department of Transportation&#8217;s ongoing efforts to enhance safety,&#8221; they will be lowering the speed limit of the coastal portion of SH 361. &#8220;The speed limit will be reduced from 60 mph to 50 mph between Park Road 22 and a point just south of Beach Access Road 1A in Port Aranas, beginning Tuesday Aug. 25,&#8221; officials said in the post. &#8220;Electronic message boards throughout the corridor will notify motorists of the upcoming change. Once the new speed limit takes effect, the boards will remind drivers of the 50 mph speed limit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The announcement follows a post made by TxDOT officials on Thursday, August 20, they would be taking &#8220;suggestions from the public on ways to improve safety on the section of\u00a0SH 361 between Corpus Christi and Port Aransas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This information will be used to inform a public town hall at a time and location to be determined but tentatively scheduled for early to mid-September on Mustang Island,&#8221; TxDOT officials wrote. They cited other recent measures they have taken in order to &#8220;mitigate safety concerns&#8221; on the highway. That includes placing five message signs, four of which are equipped by cameras, so the public can view road conditions in real time, and placing six electronic signs that inform drivers of their speed and the speed limit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those with concerns may submit feedback to SH361_Safety@txdot.gov.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Safety concerns for the highway stemmed from a history of crashes, including recent ones that killed three people in one week, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/corpus-christi\/padre-island\/dps-expands-patrols-on-highway-361-after-3-deaths-in-one-week-lawmakers-meet-with-txdot\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">KRIS 6 News<\/a>. Days after a four-vehicle crash that ended in the deaths of parents to six children and Marine Corps. veterans Roberto &#8220;Robert&#8221; Lopez and Karen Lopez, Texas State Representative Todd Hunter announced on X that he and other public officials were working on ways to improve safety measures on the 16-mile stretch of highway.
