Point Blank, the brand Summersett launched last year, has already gained recognition. It earned top honors at the 2026 Agavos Awards International Spirits Competition, a global contest that honors distillers and marketers whose work is considered exceptional within the industry.

Judges awarded Point Blank’s Blanco expression a double gold medal, with the Reposado and Añejo each winning gold in their respective categories. It’s a massive undertaking to see what all goes into the farming and the production, the harvesting element. Then, you’re into fermentation and distilling. There’s a lot of steps to the process to get it right and to do it the authentic way. It’s just a very fascinating place and it requires all different kinds of people to make it go off right.

Tequila, specifically, has always been my preference. I like it because there’s a very gritty, grimy aspect to the culture. There’s a big focus on preserving it the right way and delivering it the right way. I’ve always loved it. It’s always been my specific drink of choice. It’s clean. You can drink it clean. It’s a fascinating space.

Francis: What were you doing before this?

Summersett: I’m a real estate guy by trade. I’ve built and developed on the commercial and residential side my whole career. Tequila has been a part of my business journey for the last four years. This is not something we decided to do on a whim. This has taken years to perfect, to build the relationships and build the brand the right way. It’s been a very thoughtful process.

Francis: Point Blank is coming to market at a good time. Sales of spirits have been increasing while other categories like beer and wine have been flat or down.

Summersett: Beers are having a hard time and sectors of the wine industry are having a hard time. If you look at the numbers, I attribute a lot of it to a more health-conscious society. COVID changed everything for everybody. I think now more than ever, people are paying attention to their health, what goes into their body and what’s behind the label, in the can or what’s in the glass. Tequila is an example. You can make tequila very clean. If you’re going to drink, it’s arguably one of the better ways to do it. I think that’s why you’re seeing success in the tequila space.

Francis: There are a lot of tequila brands out there now. How will Point Blank Tequila differentiate itself?

Summersett: I love telling this story. I think when you walk down the aisle at Specs or Total Wine — any liquor store — you see all these bottles, all these labels and you’re not really sure what to make of it. The goal was to design a unit, a bottle, that was authentic in nature to Mexican heritage, to design a label, you know, in the same fashion and a closure, a top, in the same way that told a story and to differentiate the brand.

We’ve got an incredible team in a small town called San Juanito, which is outside of Guadalajara in Jalisco. That team does so much and their craft is so incredible. They have a story that deserves to be told. What you see on our website and in our social media is we’re really trying to bring individuals like Don José García, who is the patriarch, the boss man of the distillery, of the farming operations, of the composting operations. Our master distiller is a woman by the name of Zandra Gómez Santiago. Zandra is a bit of a unicorn in her space. She is a female master distiller. She is a pioneer in her own right. She’s busting through barriers for women, which we think is really cool.

To sum all that up, I want to portray and honor the work and the heritage from this part of the world and tell the story that deserves to be told. When people see Point Blank — we say all the time, no additives, no sugars, no dyes, no B.S. — this is tequila, Point Blank. We’re proud of that.

Bob Francis is business editor for the Fort Worth Report.
