SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 San Antonio police and Crime Stoppers seek out leads for a person accused of exploiting a 75-year-old woman\u2019s debit card nearly two months ago, according to a news release.<\/p>\n

The woman had surgery on June 28 at North Central Baptist Hospital and was heavily medicated, the release states. While at the hospital, the woman received a phone call from a person.<\/p>\n

Crime Stoppers believes the caller impersonated a Security Service Federal Credit Union employee and told the woman her debit card was compromised.<\/p>\n

The news release said the person went to the hospital and gave the woman a temporary debit card in exchange for her card and PIN.<\/p>\n

According to Crime Stoppers, the suspect later used the debit card at nearby ATMs and retail stores, which resulted in a \u201csubstantial financial loss\u201d for the woman.<\/p>\n

SSFCU said it\u2019s \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d about the woman\u2019s encounter with the suspect. <\/p>\n

\u201cScammers are increasingly aggressive, spoofing caller ID and impersonating banks and credit unions to steal money,\u201d SSFCU said in a statement to KSAT. \u201cSecurity Service will never call, text, or show up in person to ask for a debit card, PIN, account number, password, one-time passcode or remote access to a device.\u201d<\/p>\n

The credit union encourages customers to call the bank directly at 1-888-415-7878 if they feel they are being scammed.<\/p>\n

KSAT has reached out to North Central Baptist Hospital and had not heard back as of Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Crime Stoppers may pay up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest in connection with this case.<\/p>\n

The organization urges people with information to call 210-224-7867. To be eligible for a reward, tips must be submitted<\/a> to Crime Stoppers.<\/p>\n
