The event comes after Michelin inspectors spent the last several months quietly judging dining establishments across the Grand Canyon State.

For Valley culinary veterans, the moment represents a historic shift in Arizona’s gastronomic reputation.

Alex Stratta, a two-time Michelin-starred chef who has helmed celebrated kitchens in New York and Las Vegas, now cooks in Scottsdale as the executive chef at Belmont Kitchen and Cocktail. Stratta remembers the life-changing feeling of earning his own stars.

“I got two Michelin stars at Wynn at the restaurant called Alex,” Stratta said. “I found out through a letter, and it was the first time they had introduced Las Vegas to the Michelin Guide. It wasn’t like they gave you a heads up like they have here.”

A global benchmark for quality

The arrival of the Michelin Guide in the Southwest marks a major milestone for local chefs and dining enthusiasts alike. Stratta noted that the guide’s global reach elevates local food scenes to an international audience.

“The good news is that the exposure that Michelin has brought to American dining on a world stage is so important,” Stratta said. “Because if you’re in Hong Kong or in Mesa, you can look up a Michelin-star restaurant and get some idea that you’re going to get a quality experience at an expectation.”

But earning those coveted stars requires an intense, relentless commitment to the craft.

“Where I got it when we were at Michelin two-star, it was about relentless perfection at all costs, which is tough,” Stratta recalled.

Evolving standards and Arizona’s unique identity

While traditional Michelin standards historically favored formal European-style fine dining, Stratta says the guide’s judging criteria have evolved to embrace diverse culinary concepts.

“A lot of the stuff that Michelin talks about is the personality of the chef. Now, what we try to do is get the personality of the restaurant, which is very different,” Stratta said.

According to Stratta, traditional judging historically leaned on:

High-quality ingredients

Continuous, consistent execution

Storytelling through food

“There was no Instagram, no quick fix, ‘wow, look at that.’ There was not much of that,” Stratta said, contrasting past expectations with today’s social media-driven landscape.

Now, the guide recognizes a wider variety of dining styles. “What you didn’t see 30 years ago, 20 years ago, was a Mexican place getting two-star Michelin making tacos,” Stratta said. “Well, now it is. I understand why, because it’s a special thing… worthy of the trip.”

Writing the next chapter of Arizona’s food story

Local culinary creators have long awaited this level of statewide recognition, hoping it will validate the region’s rapidly growing talent.

“Finally, it lends credence to any development of culinary interest out in the Southwest,” Stratta said. “And there are chefs now that are coming out of this area. They may not be focused on super fine dining. They may be looking at, like, who makes the best enchilada? Who knows?”

For Stratta, the introduction of the guide is clear evidence that Arizona is maturing as a world-class culinary destination.

“I think collective this community really wants this,” Stratta said. “The fact that Michelin is finally creating a moment in Arizona is a substantial chapter in Arizona’s food scene. I think we’re getting out of our teen years as far as food culture. I think we’re starting to develop stylistically very different stuff.”

As chefs across the Valley prepare for Wednesday’s ceremony, the potential for Michelin accolades serves as a powerful motivator for the next generation of culinary talent.

“It’s going to just be the carrot at the end of the stick for everybody to try to get that,” Stratta said.

See a spelling or grammatical error in our story? Please click here to report it.

Do you have a photo or video of a breaking news story?
