A small earthquake was detected in Morris County, New Jersey, on Saturday, officials say.<\/p>\n
The 1.1-magnitude quake happened at 7:50 p.m. just over 3 miles southwest of Chester, according to the United States Geological Survey<\/a>. It originated about 7 miles underground, the USGS says.<\/p>\n It’s unclear at this time if it caused any damage.<\/p>\n There have been eight earthquakes detected in New Jersey so far this year, according to the USGS.<\/p>\n The strongest was a 2.4-magnitude quake<\/a> that hit about 3 miles outside of Bedminster in Somerset County on Jan. 30. The weakest was a 1.0-magnitude earthquake<\/a> on April 23. That quake was also located about 3 miles outside of Bedminster.<\/p>\n Three earthquakes happened in Somerset County, three happened in Hunterdon County, and two happened in Morris County.<\/p>\n There have also been two earthquakes in Westchester County, New York, this year \u2013 a 2.2-magnitude earthquake near Elmsford in March<\/a> and a 1.5-magnitude earthquake near Purchase in June.<\/p>\n The Ramapo Fault line \u2013 which runs through Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York \u2013 produces a number of earthquakes each year. Those earthquakes are typically small, measuring low on the Richter Scale.<\/p>\n
