If her songbook were to present itself as a landscape, Hollywood glamour, vintage cars, and cinema’s golden age all poetically tower in her lyrical and aesthetic universe, propping up the suitable soundstages to her vintage pop fancies, from Born to Die’s jump into Wall of Sound drama to Ultraviolence’s dreamy psych-twang.

Naturally, such a look back to American culture’s classic echo has seen Del Ray tackle some of the 20th-century giants’ biggest hits, the likes of Nina Simone, Elvis Presley, and George Gershwin, all enjoying renditions on her records or performed on stage. You’d think that such immortal names would stand as the premier bar for enduring cool, but it turns out that one recent group of the 1990s had made even the ‘Video Games’ singer hold her hands up in never matching their impeccable vibe.

“I know I’ll never be as cool as Sublime,” Del Ray quipped at her 2019 Grammy Museum interview.

Sublime? The Long Beach ska-punk outfit that proffers in dudebro frat reggae beloved by surfers and earnest bring-their-acoustic-to-the-party types? Perhaps unfair, but the Californian skank rappers’ backyard BBQ soundtracks seem a million miles away from Del Ray’s taste for all things baroque and high-class. Still, among the lauded heights of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell, Sublime also count themselves featured in Del Ray’s covers repertoire.

The final song from 1996’s eponymous third album, ‘Doin’ Time’, cut another exemplary slice of Sublime’s languid hip-hop shuffle, borrowing a sample of Herbie Mann’s ‘Summertime’ and scoring frontman Bradley Nowell’s lyrics comparing his time with a cheating, no-good ex-girlfriend akin to a spell behind bars in the big house.

It did alright, floating to 87 on the singles charts, but such cod-reggae fodder would enjoy a grander platform when Del Ray sought to reimagine the minor Sublime hit for her own song canon.

Further reading: From The Vault

Jump to May 2019, and Del Ray teased fans with hints of a new song and video, part of the marathon single campaign that preceded Norman Fucking Rockwell! that August. The timing was wry: Del Ray’s grapple of ‘Doin’ Time’ out on May 17th, the same time as the Sublime feature documentary was set to premiere at Tribeca Film Festival, but critics and pop pickers alike were wowed by Del Ray’s wield of trip-hop languor and heavy, hypnagogic, hazy shroud.

Topped off with an Attack of the 50 Foot Woman-style video, Del Ray’s ‘Doin’ Time’ didn’t actually set the charts alight either, climbing to an anaemic 59 on the Billboard Hot 100, but its inclusion in the US top ten Norman Fucking Rockwell! breathed new life into the Sublime hit far beyond what Nowell could have anticipated, who died in 1996 before the original single was even released.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE

Credit: Wikimedia Mon 24 August 2026 2:00, UK The one band that ornate pop sensation Lana Del Ray…

[29
14201,42355,183040,191804,171,13935,975,408252,297033,67,132,68
post-1020296","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-1990s","tag-42355","tag-2010s","tag-191804","tag-entertainment","tag-lana-del-rey","tag-music","tag-ska","tag-trip-hop","tag-united-states","tag-unitedstates","tag-us
["GET
