(ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Therapeutic Goods Administration&#8217;s (TGA) chief medical advisor Robyn Langham told the ABC &#8220;the localised nature&#8221; of the liver issues in Victoria suggested &#8220;a batch problem&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We are seeing reports of acute liver failure which might be related to some batch issues certainly from Victoria,&#8221; Professor Langham said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-20\/liver-failure-fake-retatrutide-health-risk\/106814372\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Patients in liver failure after using knock-off weight loss drug <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Megan Hancocks bought a drug labelled as the peptide compound retatrutide in cash from a beautician. (Four Corners: Keana Naughton)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Peptides are small chains of amino acids which act as signalling agents in the body, telling it to carry out certain processes such as hormone release or tissue repair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There are regulated peptide medications including insulin and GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This year there has been a boom in social media promotion of counterfeit, unapproved peptides, which are not safe for human use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Victoria&#8217;s health department has been contacted for comment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-22\/peptides-red-light-nad-wellness-therapies-claims\/106937662\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Do these wellness treatments actually work?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Wellness and anti-aging clinics are popping up across Australia. But do their treatments work and are they safe?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It previously warned products labelled &#8220;retatrutide&#8221; may contain contaminants that could have &#8220;toxic effects&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The ABC contacted all other state and territory health departments to ask if there had been any cases of liver toxicity associated with unapproved peptide use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Canberra Health Services confirmed it had detected liver damage from products sold as retatrutide, but would not say how many &#8220;due to the low numbers involved&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">US-based pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly is the sole owner of the patent for retatrutide and is currently running clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Lilly continues to warn the public about the potential dangers of fake medicines,&#8221; Manny Simons, general manager of Lilly Australia, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Any retatrutide available online is unapproved, unverified and simply not worth the risk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adolescents &#8216;injecting&#8217; counterfeit peptides<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Professor Langham said it was important to note there were no good batches or safe unapproved peptides \u2014 the risk of serious harm applied to all the products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There are hospital admissions happening across the country because of the use of unapproved peptides,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The risks are real, they are not theoretical.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-14\/peptides-audience-callout\/106442838\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What&#8217;s the point of peptides?
