After 120 years of operation, Philadelphia\u2019s Overbrook Elementary School might have just had its final first day of school.<\/p>\n

Kids skipped through the schoolyard and parents waved goodbye to students wearing fresh uniforms Monday morning as Overbrook and the entire Philadelphia school district kicked off the 2026-27 school year.<\/p>\n

For some, the mood was somber. Overbrook is set to close at the end of this school year as the district moves forward with its plan to close 17 schools over the next decade<\/a>. Nine schools, including Overbrook, will no longer welcome students next year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been to this school since I was in kindergarten,\u201d said Overbrook fifth grader Mahogany. \u201cI don\u2019t want to lose something that I feel safe to have.\u201d<\/p>\n

District officials have promised robust support for families at closing schools and said the closures will ensure students can access higher-quality buildings and more educational opportunities. But many students, families, and educators say the looming closures are their major concern this school year. They worry about losing tight-knit communities and neighborhood gathering places. At some schools, the threat of sweeping changes \u2014 which would close the schools of more than 4,000 students over the next decade<\/a> \u2014 is already having an effect. <\/p>\n

Overbrook Principal Kenneth Glover said he didn\u2019t yet have the school\u2019s enrollment numbers for this year. But during a press conference Monday morning, he said he knew some families in the neighborhood had opted to enroll in nearby charter schools instead of returning to Overbrook for its final year.<\/p>\n

Glover said he was prepared to work with the district\u2019s school transition team \u201cto make this a perfect school year for everyone.\u201d <\/p>\n

This year, he said \u201cthe focus needs to be instruction. The kids should not have to worry about this school being saved. That should be an adult issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

The district has said that all students from the closing schools will be relocated to schools that are either higher-performing or in better-quality buildings. Its facilities plan reassigns Overbrook Elementary students to Guion S. Bluford and Lewis C. Cassidy schools. No teachers will lose their job due to the closures and instead will be reshuffled to empty positions at other schools. <\/p>\n

Superintendent Tony Watlington, Board President Reginald Streater, and other dignitaries made no explicit mention of the closures at their morning back-to-school press conference at Alexander McClure Elementary School. <\/p>\n

Streater said school leaders continue to work to help students succeed despite the district\u2019s limited resources.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile some decisions will be tough \u2014 and we all know some decisions have been tough \u2014 we must all remain resolute in our commitment to improving outcomes and create the conditions for every student to thrive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Teachers, union leaders, and members of the City Council and state legislature say they plan to continue fighting the closures. But they have few levers to pull to influence the board\u2019s decision<\/a>. Councilmember Curtis Jones Jr., who represents the area around Overbrook Elementary, said he will introduce legislation to prevent the Overbrook property from being redeveloped into condos.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to be civil; we want to be cooperative with the school district,\u201d Jones said at the press conference outside Overbrook on Monday. \u201cBut we will act up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The school board has the final say over which schools close, and it has already approved the plan. Members of City Council are looking into changing the board\u2019s governance structure<\/a>, which could give the council more influence.<\/p>\n

Watlington said during Monday\u2019s back-to-school press conference at McClure Elementary that his focus is on improving the district\u2019s academic performance. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we\u2019ve made some significant improvement, we know that the majority of our young people are still not at grade level in reading (or) math,\u201d Watlington said. He added that the district is going to double down this year and that \u201cwe won\u2019t rest until all of our children are at grade level in reading and math.\u201d<\/p>\n

Students plan to \u2018keep going and keep pushing\u2019<\/p>\n

Parkway Northwest High School in Germantown greeted returning students with a balloon archway, a DJ, and a batch of fresh tropical smoothies. It will also close at the end of this school year under the district\u2019s closure plan.<\/p>\n

David Samuel, 16, arrived early to distribute backpacks to fellow students. But he planned to leave early from school to testify in a lawsuit that a community advocate filed against the district over its plan.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI have to miss out on the first day, because this is something that\u2019s really near and dear to my heart,\u201d he said. \u201cJust hearing the news and seeing what the parents are going to go through \u2014 I can\u2019t stop here. I still have to keep going and keep pushing.\u201d<\/p>\n

District officials said schools were added to the closure list based on several factors, including building quality, enrollment, and whether they had space for special programs such as pre-K and gym class. As part of its facilities overhaul, the district also plans to renovate 170 buildings.<\/p>\n

But many students say they just want to remain in their schools.<\/p>\n

Calin Shakoor, a 10th grader at Parkway Northwest, is determined to keep his grades up this year in hopes of convincing the school district to keep the school open.<\/p>\n

He attended multiple meetings with the school board and City Council last school year to oppose the closure.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people feel like it\u2019s a done deal, others are still fighting for it,\u201d he said. \u201cAll we can do is try to keep it open, make sure our academics is good and all that.\u201d<\/p>\n
