A 73-year-old man died early Monday after his vehicle was stuck on railroad tracks <\/a>while he was attempting to drive around lowered crossing arms, before being hit by a train in north Harris County, authorities said.<\/p>\n

The crash<\/a> happened shortly after 2 a.m. near Kuykendahl and Dowell roads, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.<\/p>\n

The train’s conductor told deputies the man attempted to go around the railroad crossing arms rather than wait for the crossing to clear. His vehicle became stuck on the tracks, and the approaching train hit the car, according to\u00a0HCSO.<\/p>\n

The man was the only person inside the vehicle. He died at the scene, authorities said. His identity has not been released.<\/p>\n

Aerial footage from the scene showed the train stopped on the tracks with the crossing arm still lowered. The vehicle was several hundred feet ahead of the train.<\/p>\n

The crash shut down the roadway for hours as authorities worked to reach the scene and clear the wreckage. Officials reportedly had to walk along Hufsmith Road because the train was blocking the roadway.<\/p>\n

Crews worked through the morning to remove the vehicle and get the train moving again. Shortly before 10:30 a.m., officials said the train had been moved and traffic had started flowing.<\/p>\n

The crash comes just months after a similar incident in northeast Harris County. In May, a driver disregarded lowered crossing arms<\/a> and was struck by an Amtrak train traveling about 60 mph, according to authorities. The driver and a young passenger were hospitalized.<\/p>\n
