Fresh off a week away upstate that he described as \u201cvery restorative,\u201d Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a> returned Monday with a plan to give New York City\u2019s parks a little renewal of their own.<\/p>\n

City Hall launched the Parks Department\u2019s new \u201cRenew Crew,\u201d a 24-person team of painters, electricians, plumbers and other trade specialists focused on making faster repairs at playgrounds, recreation centers and sports courts across the five boroughs.<\/p>\n

The city is investing $2.3 million in the initiative, which Mamdani said comes after more than 5,000 complaints were logged with 311 over the past 12 months about the kinds of problems the team is designed to tackle, including broken equipment, cracked surfaces and fields overtaken by weeds.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo longer will New Yorkers have to wait months for city government to fix their parks and their playgrounds,\u201d Mamdani said at Dry Harbor Playground in Glendale, Queens. \u201cThe Renew Crew will show up, get the job done, and move on to the next location that needs them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The administration marked the launch with a repair blitz at Dry Harbor, where crews are repairing and repainting two basketball courts, play equipment, a shuffleboard court, bocce and horseshoe courts, benches, fencing and the exterior of the park house.<\/p>\n

Workers are also repairing a drinking fountain, installing protective flooring on playgrounds, removing dead trees and carrying out landscaping around the park\u2019s 9\/11 memorial, according to City Hall.<\/p>\n

Mamdani says of Renew Crews: \u2018If it is broken, they wil fix it\u2019<\/p>\n

Similar work is underway at one playground in each borough, including Fort Four Playground in the Bronx, American Playground in Brooklyn, Annunciation Playground in Manhattan and Old Town Playground on Staten Island. The Renew Crew will tackle as many as 30 projects each year, with each targeted for completion in three weeks or less, according to City Hall.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it is broken, this crew will fix it,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cIf it is run down, this crew will renew it.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura said the crew\u2019s 24 skilled tradespeople will work across all five boroughs from April through October.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cRenew Crew allows us to respond to those everyday needs faster and to make improvements that New Yorkers can feel and see,\u201d Shimamura said, adding that crews would tackle projects and deliver results \u201cin three weeks or less.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani also urged New Yorkers to continue reporting broken equipment and other problems through 311.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThe days of those kinds of complaints collecting dust for months are no longer,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n

Back in the city, Monday\u2019s announcement also featured 8-year-old Maxime, who recorded a video in April<\/a> asking Mamdani to help open the playground at Brooklyn\u2019s McKinley Park. In the video, Maxime said construction had been underway for two years and that the playground appeared finished but remained closed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like you to please open the playground for us all Brooklyn kids to have fun and play,\u201d he told the mayor in the video. In June,\u00a0the determined kid followed up with the mayor in person<\/a> while Hizzoner was canvassing ahead of the primaries.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A few weeks later, Maxime said Monday, the playground opened.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cMy parents always told me that my voice matters, and I want to thank them for believing in me and encouraging me to speak up,\u201d Maxime said. \u201cAnd I want other kids to know that your voice matters too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maxime\u2019s plea also fits neatly into what Mamdani has called his administration\u2019s \u201cpothole politics\u201d \u2013\u00a0 a governing philosophy centered on showing New Yorkers that City Hall can handle the small, everyday problems alongside its larger ambitions.<\/p>\n

At his 100-day rally in April,<\/a> Mamdani described the approach as one in which government is \u201cnot too busy, not too self-important, not too mired in paperwork to fix the problems of this city, no matter their size.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf government can\u2019t do the small things,\u201d he asked then, \u201chow could you ever trust it to do the big ones?\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Since taking office, some New Yorkers have increasingly taken those words literally<\/a>, tagging the mayor online about potholes, broken fountains<\/a> and other neighborhood problems. Mamdani has at times responded in kind, posting after city agencies moved to address the complaints.<\/p>\n

How the mayor spent his summer vacation<\/p>\n

Later, Mamdani offered a few details from his week away, saying he had \u201ca lovely time upstate,\u201d bounced around and missed the city. He said he stopped at the Uzbek restaurant Alons, bought two roast chickens at a Tops supermarket in Coxsackie and visited Casa Susanna in Leeds.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very restorative,\u201d Mamdani said, adding that he stayed in regular contact with his team while away.\n<\/p>\n
