(iStock)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The researchers believe this shift may contribute to chronic inflammation linked to cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases, <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_2498430\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/alzheimers-risk-35-percent-lower-common-menopause-treatment-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">including Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">They also noted the deterioration of cells involved in maintaining the blood-brain barrier \u2013 the protective filter that helps keep harmful substances out of the brain \u2013 as well as widespread changes in DNA and gene activity.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_2498431\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/longevity-gene-may-protect-brain-alzheimers-boosting-dna-repair-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>&#8216;LONGEVITY GENE&#8217; MAY PROTECT THE BRAIN FROM ALZHEIMER&#8217;S BY BOOSTING DNA REPAIR, STUDY FINDS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">One of the most exciting implications of the study, according to Zemke, is that the replacement immune cells originate in the blood, which means they are more accessible than cells already deep inside the brain.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;It may eventually be possible to modify blood-derived immune cells so that they are more protective and less inflammatory when in the brain,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That could provide an entirely new way to approach Alzheimer\u2019s and other neurological diseases without having to directly manipulate cells within the <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_2498432\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nervous-system-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">central nervous system<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/brain-scan-doctor-patient.jpg\" alt=\"doctor holds brain scan to show senior woman\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Researchers found that these brain changes may help explain why aging increases the chances of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative disease, including dementia.
