{"id":1023111,"date":"2026-08-25T12:50:20","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T12:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1023111\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T12:50:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T12:50:20","slug":"trump-considers-changing-lake-ontario-to-lake-america-as-trade-war-with-canada-heats-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1023111\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump considers changing Lake Ontario to \u201cLake America\u201d as trade war with Canada heats up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he is considering changing the name of Lake Ontario to \u201cLake America\u201d as the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-canada-carney-2051f2694810c5cb2b8210c9994c9e64\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trade war<\/a> between the United States and Canada intensifies.<\/p>\n<p>Such a change would be reminiscent of the Republican president\u2019s unilateral action last year by executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/gulf-of-mexico-canada-denmark-mexico-f9834267fad743e894efb2168938babb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gulf of America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The United States and Canada are locked in a trade dispute, with Canada expected to announce retaliatory measures Tuesday. That\u2019s in response to the Trump administration <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-us-trade-tariffs-trump-857ef76b20a766e370d70176135b678e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">enacting 50% tariffs<\/a> on $20 billion of Canadian goods over the weekend after talks between the countries broke down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don\u2019t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer,\u201d Trump said Tuesday on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario is Canada\u2019s most populous province and is home to the country\u2019s auto industry.<\/p>\n<p>The rhetoric between the two countries is escalating, with Trump telling Canadian leaders Monday to \u201cfall in line\u201d or face consequences \u201cfar WORSE\u201d than existing tariffs. Prime Minister Mark Carney has <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-us-trade-war-trump-carney-tariffs-4d18583fe52134ca8550652ad9772d2c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accused Washington<\/a> of trying to subordinate Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also threatened <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-us-trade-war-trump-carney-tariffs-4d18583fe52134ca8550652ad9772d2c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new 50% tariffs<\/a> on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel, while Carney said U.S. trade demands showed that Washington wanted to \u201cdestroy our major industries,\u201d including <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gm-tariff-refund-trump-supreme-court-1b476b4c7e62bbf9cf8155391aec7222\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">autos<\/a>, steel and aluminum.<\/p>\n<p>Canada and the United States share one of the world\u2019s largest trading relationships, with deeply integrated supply chains across <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-canada-tariffs-senate-2026-campaign-c3d2461184a2b8656abd01376452e0d5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">autos<\/a>, energy, agriculture and manufacturing, making a prolonged trade fight potentially costly for businesses and workers on both sides of the border.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses and consumers are caught in the middle, facing uncertainty about how much prices may increase.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-0b0000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    <strong>Sign up for the Ground Game Newsletter:<\/strong><br \/>\n    Your guide to the biggest stories in politics, policy and U.S. elections.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Michael Howard II, owner of a furniture business in Warren, Michigan, outside Detroit, said the tariffs will hamper the \u201cability for us to put food on the table for our family, but also impacts the ability for us to give back to our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Howard and his wife started their business a decade ago. They make and sell everything from dining room tables to bookcases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo say that we don\u2019t need Canada is just disingenuous,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s dishonest. And it\u2019s just absolutely not truthful. We need our neighbor, but also they need us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finance Minister Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne and three other Cabinet ministers are also expected Tuesday morning to share details of support for workers affected by tariffs. Carney said earlier Monday that Canada may need to move away from matching U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar and instead use more targeted retaliation aimed at protecting Canadian workers and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn attitude at the negotiation table that Canada is a subsidiary of the United States\u201d is \u201cnot something we\u2019re going to accept,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n<p>Carney was even more blunt in French.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe learned during the negotiations that the Americans want to destroy our major industries, including autos, steel and aluminum,\u201d Carney said. \u201cThat was one of the main reasons we said no. It was a bad deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carney said Monday U.S. negotiators had raised the discoverability of French-language content on streaming platforms, along with French-language labeling rules, as trade irritants. He rejected the idea that those protections were negotiable, saying in French: \u201cFor the Americans, questions about the French language, Quebec culture, francophone culture and Canadian culture are irritants. Here in Quebec, here in Canada, they are rights.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In a social media post early Tuesday, Trump wrote \u201cI would never interfere with Canadians speaking French! In fact, I have never even thought of doing such a stupid thing. This lie was made up by a weak and ineffective Prime Minister in an attempt to gain political support, which he has totally lost, from the people of Quebec.
