Families living at a north Houston apartment complex say getting their children to and from school has become a daily challenge because they do not currently have a Houston ISD bus stop serving their complex.<\/p>\n
Residents at Yale Village Apartments, located at 5673 Yale Street near West Tidwell Road and North Shepherd Drive, say students who attend Highland Heights Elementary School and M.C. Williams Middle School are being driven to school by parents, grandparents and other relatives each morning and afternoon.<\/p>\n
Vicki Muse, whose grandchildren attend schools in the area, said families have been working together to make sure students get to class.<\/p>\n
Each morning, residents begin loading children into vehicles around 7:15 a.m., taking them to school in groups before returning to pick up more students.<\/p>\n
Muse said the arrangement is taking a toll on families who are balancing work schedules, transportation costs and other responsibilities.<\/p>\n
Residents also raised concerns about what happens when an adult cannot immediately pick a student up from school. They say some children may have to wait for a ride depending on their parents\u2019 or relatives\u2019 work schedules.<\/p>\n
Families say they are especially concerned about students attempting to walk because the route includes busy roadways and intersections where vehicles travel at high speeds.<\/p>\n
KPRC 2 reached out to Houston ISD to ask why students living at Yale Village Apartments do not have bus service.<\/p>\n
In a statement Monday, the district said it had not received a transportation request from anyone at the complex.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo one from that apartment complex has requested transportation. They need to fill out the transportation survey to receive a bus stop,\u201d the HISD Press Office said.<\/p>\n
The district provided families with an online transportation survey that can be used to request a bus stop.<\/p>\n
Muse and other residents told KPRC 2 they had previously raised their transportation concerns with school officials but said they were not aware of the survey until the district\u2019s response to our questions.<\/p>\n
KPRC 2 followed up with HISD asking for additional information about the district\u2019s current transportation policy, including what determines whether a student qualifies for bus service and whether completing the survey automatically makes a student eligible.<\/p>\n
We also asked whether HISD has evaluated the safety of the walking route between Yale Village Apartments and the schools, and what additional assistance may be available to families at the complex.<\/p>\n
As of Monday evening, the district had not responded to those additional questions.<\/p>\n
For families at Yale Village Apartments, residents say the issue goes beyond convenience. They say reliable transportation would help reduce the amount of time parents spend making multiple school trips each day while also giving families greater peace of mind about how their children are getting to and from school.<\/p>\n
