(NewsNation<\/a>) \u2014 As Lindsay Clancy’s<\/a> trial nears its final days, hundreds of women dressed in pink gathered outside the courtroom in support of the Massachusetts mom. The case has sparked a national conversation about postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis<\/a>. The women wore clothes with messages of support like, ” believe” and, “she needed help.”<\/p>\n

NewsNation’s Brian Entin<\/a> spoke with psychiatric mental health nurse, Kathleen Hood who said that multiple healthcare providers were negligent in treating Clancy.<\/p>\n

“I would never normally (blame healthcare providers<\/a>). But it wasn’t just like human error, it was negligence on multiple provider levels, but it’s like basic stuff that should have been obvious, like the symptoms with the meds,” said Hood. “Not for someone who’s not in psych, but for someone who’s in psych they should have known better than that.”<\/p>\n

\u00a0Which trial moments could decide Lindsay Clancy’s fate?\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Hood said that in her opinion the medication<\/a> prescribed to Clancy may have caused her mental condition to deteriorate. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors’s (SSRI’s) and antidepressants can cause symptoms of bipolar disorder and mania, according to Hood.<\/p>\n

“If you make it worse by going on an SSRI, and then you add more SSRIs to it, and then it can, yes, make symptoms worse,” Hood said. ” So, it’s not about the amount of meds. It’s just that they should have known that wasn’t the right med choice regarding the symptoms she was you know reporting.”<\/p>\n

Clancy had reported auditory hallucinations of a male voice<\/a> telling her to kill her children and had exhibited symptoms of depression.<\/p>\n

“She tried to do all the right things, and it still didn’t happen,” said Hood. “We obviously are a broken system, and we all need to do better as providers and in general, but you really need to listen to patients, and it makes a big difference int the outcomes. And we need more support and more systems in place obviously.”<\/p>\n
