NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 A gunman who killed four people<\/a> at a Manhattan office building before killing himself claimed in a note to have a brain disease linked to contact sports and was trying to target the National Football League\u2019s headquarters but took the wrong elevator, officials said Tuesday. <\/p>\n

Investigators believe Shane Tamura, of Las Vegas, was trying to get to the NFL offices in the building Monday after shooting several people<\/a> in the lobby but entered the wrong elevator banks, Mayor Eric Adams said in interviews. <\/p>\n

Four people were killed, including an off-duty New York City police officer, Didarul Islam.<\/p>\n

Police said Tamura had a history of mental illness, and a rambling note found on his body suggested that he had a grievance against the NFL over a claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The degenerative brain disease<\/a> has been linked to concussions and other repeated head trauma common in contact sports like football, but it can only be diagnosed after someone has died.<\/p>\n

Tamura\u2019s note said his brain should be studied after he died, two people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. The note also specifically referenced the NFL, one of them said.<\/p>\n

Tamura played high school football in California nearly two decades ago, but he never played in the NFL.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe seemed to have blamed the NFL,\u201d the mayor told WPIX-TV. \u201cThe NFL headquarters was located in the building, and he mistakenly went up the wrong elevator bank.\u201d<\/p>\n

AP correspondent Julie Walker reports from the scene of Monday\u2019s deadly shooting in Manhattan – on a possible motive.<\/p>\n

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called it an \u201can unspeakable act of violence in our building,\u201d saying he was deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded and the officer who gave his life to protect others.<\/p>\n

Goodell said in a memo to staff that a league employee was seriously injured in the attack and was hospitalized in stable condition. <\/p>\n

The shooting happened along Park Avenue, one the nation\u2019s most recognized streets, and just blocks from Grand Central Terminal and Rockefeller Center. It\u2019s also less than a 15-minute walk from where UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson<\/a> was shot and killed last December by a man who prosecutors say was angry<\/a> over corporate greed.<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he knows that area of Manhattan well.<\/p>\n

\u201cI trust our Law Enforcement Agencies to get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence. My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice,\u201d Trump posted on social media.<\/p>\n

The building houses the NFL and other well-known businesses<\/p>\n

Surveillance video showed the gunman exiting a double-parked BMW early Monday evening with a rifle, then marching across a public plaza into the skyscraper<\/a>, which is also home to investment firm Blackstone and other companies. <\/p>\n

Then, he started firing, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, killing a police officer working a corporate security detail and hitting a woman who tried to take cover as he sprayed the lobby with gunfire.<\/p>\n

He next made his way to the elevator bank, shooting a guard at a security desk and another man in the lobby, the commissioner said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe appeared to have first walked past the officer and then he turned to his right, and saw him and discharged several rounds,\u201d Adams said in a TV interview. <\/p>\n

The man took the elevator to the 33rd floor offices of the company that owns the building, Rudin Management, and shot and killed one person on that floor. The man then shot himself, the commissioner said. <\/p>\n

Blackstone confirmed that one of its employees, real estate executive Wesley LePatner, was among those killed. <\/p>\n

\u201cWords cannot express the devastation we feel,\u201d the company said in a statement. <\/p>\n

The officer who was killed was from Bangladesh <\/p>\n

Islam, 36, had served as a police officer in New York City for 3\u00bd years and was an immigrant from Bangladesh, Tisch said at a news conference.<\/p>\n

His body was draped in the New York Police Department flag as it was moved from the hospital to an ambulance, with fellow officers standing at attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm\u2019s way. He made the ultimate sacrifice,\u201d Tisch said. \u201cHe died as he lived: a hero.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the investigation\u2019s challenges is that Tamura only arrived in New York shortly before the shooting, leaving few clues in the area, the mayor said. Another is that for law enforcement, \u201cdealing with those who come from areas with lax gun laws that allow individuals to have these high-powered weapons into cities like New York that have strong gun laws.\u201d<\/p>\n
