One person is dead after San Diego police opened fire in Point Loma after conducting a welfare check on Tuesday night, according to the San Diego Police Department.<\/p>\n
Around 3:30 p.m., San Diego police officers responded to a call for a welfare check on a person holding a knife in the backyard of a Point Loma home located at 2700 Nipoma St., SDPD Officer John Buttle told NBC San Diego.<\/p>\n
At some point during Tuesday’s incident, SWAT was called in and San Diego police fatally shot the person, Buttle said.<\/p>\n
It is not yet clear what events led to the shooting. No officers were injured during the event, police said.<\/p>\n
No other details were immediately available.<\/p>\n
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department will be taking over the investigation. San Diego County law enforcement agencies have a memorandum of understanding that prevents departments from investigating shootings involving their own officers.<\/p>\n
