A heroic mother has been stabbed seven times with scissors while protecting her 10-year-old son with a brain tumour during a random attack in Melbourne\u2019s Docklands.<\/a><\/p>\n

The 46-year-old woman suffered a broken leg, a busted eye and puncture wounds when she was allegedly attacked by 27-year-old Jerry Sowood outside police headquarters on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The mother and son had travelled from Phillip Island to Melbourne for a brain scan appointment scheduled for Wednesday.<\/p>\n

She told 7NEWS they were walking back to their hotel and were only metres away when they were allegedly set upon by Sowood.<\/p>\n

The attack began when Sowood allegedly punched the 10-year-old boy in the face, prompting his mother to intervene to protect her son.<\/p>\n

Good Samaritans, including Brian Bradley, stepped in to help restrain the 27-year-old by making a citizen\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just instinct, just what a man should be doing. Instead of picking up a phone and recording, it was just gut instinct to jump in and assist people in need,\u201d Bradley said.<\/p>\n

Sowood has been charged with affray, two counts of intentionally cause injury and unlawful assault, conduct endanger life and conduct endanger serious injury.<\/p>\n

He made no application for bail on Wednesday afternoon and is refusing legal help.<\/p>\n

He told the court: \u201cI was in a mental state of mind and I did what I did. At least they\u2019re both still breathing, you know, so I kept my humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the ordeal, the 10-year-old still attended his brain scan appointment on Wednesday. His mother is recovering at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.<\/p>\n
