But when New England Aquarium Aerial survey observers look out of a plane, they&#8217;re scouring the seas\u00a0for marine <a data-ylk=\"slk:animals;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/category\/animals\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">animals<\/a> swimming far below.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">And on August 16, the team was\u00a0 rewarded\u2014big time. While soaring over the <a data-ylk=\"slk:Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/exploring-obamas-seafloor-canyons-by-mini-sub\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument<\/a>, they spotted over 2,000 animals across 15 different marine species. The Atlantic Ocean marine sanctuary 130 miles southeast of Cape Cod was designated in 2016. The Trump Administration has recently <a data-ylk=\"slk:allowed commercial fishing;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2026\/02\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-unleashes-commercial-fishing-in-the-atlantic\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">allowed commercial fishing<\/a> in the Monument.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">During the aquarium&#8217;s previous aerial survey over the special habitat in July, scientists identified almost 650 animals, including over 600 dolphins, endangered sperm whales, one whale shark, and 23 pilot whales (genus Globicephala).
