{"id":102873,"date":"2025-07-29T19:42:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T19:42:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/102873\/"},"modified":"2025-07-29T19:42:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T19:42:14","slug":"fomo-won-i-own-a-switch-2-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/102873\/","title":{"rendered":"FOMO won, I own a Switch 2 now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9i ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya1\">Well, that didn\u2019t even last two months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9i ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya1\">Just after the launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/nintendo-switch-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nintendo Switch 2<\/a>, I wrote about how, despite the tremendous amount of FOMO, I, like so many gamers, felt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/nintendo-switch-2\/604491\/console-release-day-fomo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Nintendo Switch 2 wasn\u2019t a necessary purchase just yet<\/a>. Most consoles don\u2019t provide marked upgrades at launch and often won\u2019t have a robust games line-up for some time. The Switch 2 is no different, with only Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza as must-play exclusives in the immediate launch window. Yet, I couldn\u2019t help myself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9i ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya1\">Yes, the FOMO won; now I own a Switch 2. Perhaps it\u2019s an attempt at a post-purchase justification, but I think buying a Switch 2 now \u2014 and they\u2019ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/the-switch-2-stock-shortage-may-already-be-over\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">somewhat in stock lately<\/a> \u2014 is actually a wise decision for US consumers at the moment.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"x3y21z1\" href=\"https:\/\/platform.polygon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/04\/switch_2_direct.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;crop=0,0,100,100\" data-pswp-height=\"743\" data-pswp-width=\"1228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\"><img alt=\"Switch 2 console in front of an illustrated background of Nintendo characters\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"fill\" class=\"bdxwne0\" style=\"position:absolute;height:100%;width:100%;left:0;top:0;right:0;bottom:0;color:transparent;background-size:cover;background-position:50% 50%;background-repeat:no-repeat;background-image:url(&quot;data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg' %3E%3Cfilter id='b' color-interpolation-filters='sRGB'%3E%3CfeGaussianBlur stdDeviation='20'\/%3E%3CfeColorMatrix values='1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 100 -1' result='s'\/%3E%3CfeFlood x='0' y='0' width='100%25' height='100%25'\/%3E%3CfeComposite operator='out' in='s'\/%3E%3CfeComposite in2='SourceGraphic'\/%3E%3CfeGaussianBlur stdDeviation='20'\/%3E%3C\/filter%3E%3Cimage width='100%25' height='100%25' x='0' y='0' preserveAspectRatio='none' style='filter: url(%23b);' href='data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAEAAAABCAQAAAC1HAwCAAAAC0lEQVR42mN8+R8AAtcB6oaHtZcAAAAASUVORK5CYII='\/%3E%3C\/svg%3E&quot;)\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/switch_2_direct.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Graphic: Polygon; Source images: Nintendo; Inkee Wang for Polygon<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9i ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya1\">While it didn\u2019t launch with the largest lineup of exclusives, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/analysis\/615967\/nintendo-switch-2-game-release-calander-2025-analysis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nintendo\u2019s book club-like approach<\/a> to releasing games suggests its lineup will only grow. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/review\/605637\/mario-kart-world-review-nintendo-switch-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mario Kart World<\/a> is a blast, and I\u2019m enjoying its new features more than I thought I would. 24 racers create more opportunity for chaos (always welcome), driving track to track in a Grand Prix is a fun wrinkle to races, and the Knockout Tour mode, in which racers are gradually eliminated before the final four duke it out for first place, is obnoxiously enjoyable. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/review\/616250\/donkey-kong-bananza-nintendo-switch-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donkey Kong Bananza<\/a> is no slouch either, and Kong\u2019s \u201cpunch everything\u201d mentality is an interesting juxtaposition to the platforming-focused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/nintendo-switch-2\/613954\/donkey-kong-bananza-play-super-mario-odyssey-instead\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Super Mario Odyssey<\/a>, which I was just playing before picking up a Switch 2.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9i ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/nintendo-switch-2\/599535\/free-switch-2-upgrades\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">upgrades to original Nintendo Switch games<\/a> make the purchase easier to swallow as well. I enjoyed the hell out of Pok\u00e9mon Scarlet at launch and through its DLC \u2014 my playthrough is over 160 hours \u2014 but that enjoyment came in spite of its poor performance on the original console. Its boost on Switch 2 doesn\u2019t change the bland environments, but the framerate is so much smoother that it makes exploring Paldea a much more welcome experience. Pok\u00e9mon populate the world in droves now, and I\u2019m excited to leverage that for some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/nintendo-switch-2\/604225\/switch-2-pokemon-scarlet-violet-shiny-easy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shiny hunting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9i ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya1\">Despite the great games, though, the main reason I pulled the trigger on a Switch 2 was because of its price. Not because its sticker price is cheap \u2014 $500 for the Mario Kart World bundle is nothing to sneeze at \u2014 but because it realistically could be at its lowest price for a while.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9i ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/tv\/615665\/south-park-season-27-premiere-trump-penis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s tariff policies have been tough to follow, due to <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/we-can-do-whatever-we-want-trump-sows-confusion-on-his-summer-tariff-timeline-182901280.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confounding timelines<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/business\/tariffs-trump-timeline-dg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">frequency at which they\u2019re modified<\/a>. Speaking about the effect of tariffs on the video games industry, New York University professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/explained\/521905\/trump-tariffs-china-consoles-nintendo-switch-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joost van Dreunen told Polygon<\/a> in February, \u201cIt\u2019s not just that your console is going to be more expensive [&#8230;] It\u2019s everything around it as well.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mollybohannon\/2025\/04\/02\/heres-the-full-list-of-trumps-reciprocal-tariffs-announced-wednesday\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump announced tariffs on April 2<\/a>, the same day the Nintendo Switch 2 was fully showcased, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/nintendo-switch-2\/553133\/pre-orders-delayed-trump-tariff\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nintendo reacted by delaying preorders<\/a> before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/nintendo-switch-2\/561021\/accessories-price-increase-pre-order\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">upping the costs of some Nintendo Switch 2 accessories<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9i ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya1\">Tariffs on countries like Canada, Japan, and Cambodia are <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/trumps-aug-1-tariff-deadline\/story?id=123921765\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">set to go into effect Aug. 1<\/a>, though who really knows at this point if that\u2019ll happen. More concerning, however, are the hardware prices and how this current generation is bucking a trend \u2014 instead of prices dropping as time goes on, consoles are going up in price. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/news\/581992\/xbox-price-increase-us\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Xbox Series X increased by $100 earlier this year<\/a> while the baby Xbox (Xbox Series S) went up by $80 (to $380 for its 512 GB model), taking away some of the cost-efficient charm it once had. Though the US market hasn\u2019t been affected yet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/news\/558161\/ps5-price-increase-new-europe-uk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sony has been raising the price of the PlayStation 5 around the globe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9i ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya1\">One has to wonder if in due time the Switch 2 will see the same fate. Instead of the console receiving a price reduction in a few years (when a more robust games lineup could help convince more people to upgrade), it\u2019s entirely possible it gets more expensive than its already robust $450 launch price.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9i ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya1\">Ultimately, I had to pair the facts with speculation. I knew I was going to eventually get a Switch 2 (fact), but if the price could potentially go up (speculation), why not just bite the bullet now? These are the kind of mental gymnastics I did the other day before confirming purchase on my shiny new Switch 2.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9i ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya1\">I\u2019ve been loving it since and have been playing on it every day; the Switch 2 pulled a Uno Reverse in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/opinion\/611226\/nintendo-switch-2-replaced-steam-deck-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">replacing my Steam Deck as my go-to handheld<\/a> after the Deck replaced my OLED Switch two years ago. I recognize I\u2019m still in the honeymoon phase and that new console shine may wear off soon, but, until then, I got bananas to destroy.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"duet--article--comments-link g6d1ps9\" href=\"http:\/\/www.polygon.com\/nintendo-switch-2\/617002\/fomo-buying-switch-tariffs-price-increase#comments\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Well, that didn\u2019t even last two months.
