According to the attorney general\u2019s office, the sheriff has maintained that agreement with ICE since March 2020.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll\u00a0law enforcement\u00a0agencies are expected to\u00a0uphold New\u00a0York\u2019s\u00a0laws,\u201d said James \u201cThe Rensselaer County Sheriff\u2019s Office has been given every opportunity to follow the law, yet has chosen not to. My office is suing to enforce New York\u2019s laws and ensure that local law enforcement agencies remain focused on their most fundamental responsibility: keeping New Yorkers safe.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCompliance with the Local Cops, Local Crimes Act is not optional. Rensselaer County\u2019s failure to act in accordance with the law sends a clear message: these elected leaders are not serious about New Yorkers\u2019 safety,\u201d said\u00a0Hochul \u201cToday, we are taking action to ensure the Rensselaer County Sheriff\u2019s Office performs the duties required of it under state law, because no one in New York State is above the law.\u201d<\/p>\n
Officials in Rensselaer County have made public statements in response. They said the governor\u2019s office and attorney general \u201ccould take that letter, crumple it up, and shove it.\u201d<\/p>\n
