{"id":102937,"date":"2025-07-29T20:14:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T20:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/102937\/"},"modified":"2025-07-29T20:14:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T20:14:13","slug":"naplan-results-again-show-one-third-of-students-arent-meeting-literacy-and-numeracy-expectations-amid-calls-for-urgent-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/102937\/","title":{"rendered":"NAPLAN results again show one-third of students aren&#8217;t meeting literacy and numeracy expectations amid calls for urgent change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">One third of Australian students aren&#8217;t meeting &#8220;challenging but reasonable&#8221; expectations for literacy and numeracy following the third straight year of concerning NAPLAN results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">About 10 per cent of students are so far behind they require additional support to catch up to their peers, while another roughly one-fifth are rated as merely &#8220;developing&#8221; toward expectations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen declines in student achievement despite significant investment in funding of the school system,&#8221; education analyst Glenn Fahey, from the Centre for Independent Studies, said.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ContentAlignment_marginBottom__4H_6E ContentAlignment_overflowVisible__N2zKU\">\n<li>In reading, on average 9.3 per cent of students were at the &#8220;needs additional support&#8221; level<\/li>\n<li>In numeracy, on average 9.2 per cent of students were at the &#8220;needs additional support&#8221; level.<\/li>\n<li>In writing, on average 9.4 per cent of students were at the &#8220;needs additional support&#8221; level<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Sadly, we don&#8217;t have the same level of demand from the public to lift school education as we do in virtually any other area of public policy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Fahey is particularly concerned about the large number of students who need additional support, warning that many never catch up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This is a code red for your students&#8217; achievement in school. They&#8217;re the biggest investment by the Australian government in public schools ever, and this is not a blank cheque. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If a student is in the developing proficiency level, it means they are working towards expectations \u2014 in other words, they are making progress, and will continue to do so with more time in school, expert teachers and targeted support.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Larsen also said NAPLAN does not capture the full range of learning happening in Australian schools.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-08-14\/naplan-results-2024-revealed\/104205514\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 NAPLAN results revealed<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">One in three Australian school students is not meeting literacy and numeracy benchmarks, and more than one in ten need additional support, the 2024 NAPLAN results show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;NAPLAN assesses only literacy and numeracy skills of children from Year 3 to Year 9. While these are important and foundational skills for many other academic domains, literacy and numeracy are not the only important areas of learning in schools,&#8221; Dr Larsen said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What about creative arts? History? Music? Physical Education? Drama?
