\n\tLiam Neeson<\/a>, who stars in the new \u201cThe Naked Gun<\/a>\u201d with Pamela Anderson<\/a>, has a very simple reason why he believes audiences need the reboot of the classic comedy.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBecause we\u2019re all fucked. And we need a few giggles,\u201d he told Variety Monday at the movie\u2019s New York City premiere.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe delivered the line in the deadpan style of his on-screen persona, Frank Drebin Jr., the biological (and spiritual) heir to Leslie Nielsen\u2019s iconic police lieutenant. The character last graced the big screen in 1994.<\/p>\n

\n\tNeeson\u00a0did joint interviews with Anderson, who smirked and nodded along with his bleak assessment of the world. But don\u2019t ask about how the sausage is made. When one reporter inquired about how they broke the ice on set,\u00a0Neeson\u00a0scrunched his face in confusion. \u201cWe broke the ice?\u201d he repeated back, again channeling the oblivious Frank Drebin charm. The pair then laughed in unison and said they jumped right in headfirst.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt just feels like people are ready to have a big, good-natured laugh about the policing situation in Los Angeles,\u201d producer Seth MacFarlane joked while introducing the film at the SVA Theatre. \u201cWe really nailed the timing of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMacFarlane was likely referencing the ICE raids that sparked mass protests in LA. He may not have know that as the \u201cNaked Gun\u201d was getting underway, a gunman had\u00a0just opened fire<\/a>\u00a0in a Midtown office building and killed four people.<\/p>\n

\n\tParamount\u2019s \u201cNaked Gun\u201d reboot sidesteps any attempt at satirizing contemporary events in favor of a more absurd plot. Drebin Jr. is racing to stop a deranged billionaire from unleashing a toxic gas that\u2019ll revert civilians to their primal form while the ultra-wealthy hide in a private bunker, where they\u2019ll be treated to a nonstop performance from \u201cWeird Al\u201d Yankovic.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe siren-blaring question, however, is whether this kind of classic comedy will resonate with younger audiences who consume humor in bite-sized chunks on social media. YouTuber-turned-actor Liza Koshy believes the rapid-fire pace of jokes will hook them in. \u201cIt\u2019s back to back to back,\u201d Koshy told\u00a0Variety. \u201cIt engages your attention span just like scrolling on TikTok would. So it\u2019s going to be a dopamine rush.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tYankovic, who\u2019s dared the world to be stupid\u00a0since 1985, said Hollywood hit pause on goofy theatrical comedies after \u201cthe quality maybe went down or we got overly bombarded with movies like that.\u201d He now hopes \u201cThe Naked Gun\u201d reboot \u201cheralds a new age of comedy in the theaters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with laughing at stupid things,\u201d he added. \u201cPeople say, \u2018Oh, we live in tough times and we need comedies like this more now than ever,\u2019 but I don\u2019t know that there\u2019s ever been a time in the history of the world where everything has been perfect and we didn\u2019t need comedy. I think comedy is always welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Naked Gun\u201d opens in theaters Aug. 1.<\/p>\n
