JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 The former Regency Square Mall\u2019s east wing was approved for demolition Friday morning, signaling the start of the end for the 59-year-old regional shopping center.<\/p>\n

According to the Jacksonville Daily Record<\/a>, the city issued a permit for Realco Recycling Co. Inc. to demolish the East Mall between Impact Church and the former JCPenney department store.<\/p>\n

Work likely will start next week to take down the building. Site work has been ongoing in preparation.<\/p>\n

The city issued a permit Aug. 10 for Lighthouse Construction of North Florida LLC of Jacksonville to put up masonry walls to cap off Impact Church and the JCPenney building.<\/p>\n

Impact Church owns and operates its building, which is not part of the demolition.<\/p>\n

The closed JCPenney building is expected to be renovated for another use.<\/p>\n
