Hundreds of pounds of memorabilia from the careers of Hollywood stars Glenn Ford and Eleanor Powell will go on sale beginning Saturday to help raise money for repairs to the historic Hollywood Heritage Museum.<\/p>\n
Peter Ford, the son of Ford and Powell, donated about 700 pounds of memorabilia saved from his parents\u2019 careers, according to the museum. The collection was large enough that it was delivered on a pallet.<\/p>\n
Items include vintage magazines, lobby cards, press books and photographs.<\/p>\n
\u201cPick up some new Hollywood history reading material, acquire a new movie poster for your home, dig through photo stills of your favorite actors and films, catch up on the latest movie star gossip in fan magazines circa 1952, take home a film festival on DVD, featuring hundreds of Old Hollywood titles,\u201d the Hollywood Heritage Museum said in a Facebook post.<\/p>\n
Ford and Powell were both major stars of Hollywood\u2019s Golden Age. Ford, whose career spanned more than five decades, was known for films including \u201cGilda,\u201d \u201cThe Big Heat\u201d and \u201cBlackboard Jungle.\u201d Powell was one of Hollywood\u2019s leading musical stars and dancers, appearing in films including \u201cBorn to Dance,\u201d \u201cBroadway Melody of 1938\u201d and \u201cShip Ahoy.\u201d The two married in 1943 and divorced in 1959.<\/p>\n
The five-day book, memorabilia and media sale will also feature celebrity-owned items donated by the Motion Picture and Television Fund, along with entertainment-related books, DVDs, movie posters and film stills.<\/p>\n
The sale will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Hollywood Heritage Museum, 2100 N. Highland Ave., across from the Hollywood Bowl.<\/p>\n
Additional sale dates are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, Saturday, Sept. 5, and Sunday, Sept. 6.<\/p>\n
Admission and parking are free.<\/p>\n
Proceeds will benefit a project to replace the roof of the Lasky-DeMille Barn, the historic structure that houses the museum. Hollywood Heritage said it has raised enough money to purchase shingles and begin the first phase of the project but is continuing to raise money for installation and other maintenance work.<\/p>\n
The barn was built in 1901 and later used by film industry pioneers Jesse L. Lasky and Cecil B. DeMille as a production facility. DeMille used the site while making the 1914 film \u201cThe Squaw Man,\u201d regarded as the first feature-length motion picture made in Hollywood.<\/p>\n
The building, designated California State Historic Landmark No. 554 in 1956 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014, is described by Hollywood Heritage as the oldest surviving motion picture production building in Hollywood.<\/p>\n
Hollywood Heritage has maintained and preserved the barn since the 1980s.
