(AAP: Mick Tsikas)

‘Young boys and men are prime targets’

Implementation is a major factor in Australia’s efforts to tackle family, domestic and sexual violence, but at the same time the very nature of the threat is changing.

The current plan was only designed a few years ago, but the online environment is changing extremely fast.

Founder of the Teach Us Consent advocacy group Chanel Contos has launched a campaign calling on the federal government to “fix our feeds” by making social media algorithms “opt-in” for everyone.

She warns content is increasingly being served to young boys and men that labels women and minorities as the “grievance” for their issues.

“Social media algorithms, it may not be clear the link of that to violence against women and children, but if you peel back some layers, you can imagine that we have this profit model that is based on promising outrage, fear, insecurity, desire, arousal, any strong emotions,” Contos told David Speers on the Insiders podcast this week.

“And young boys and men are prime targets for that.”

Contos is appreciative of the government’s efforts broadly, but says if it doesn’t act on algorithms, it isn’t being “serious” about the problem most impacting young people.

“I think it’s quite obvious the harm that algorithms are doing to everyone, but particularly young people, and women are largely on the receiving end of that,” she says.

LoadingSurveillance glasses sell

Another clear example of technology outrunning policy is the recent proliferation of wearable smart devices, such as glasses, able to surreptitiously record their surroundings.

Caught on candid camera glasses

A new pair of camera glasses purchased online has been found to contain video footage of factory workers who appear to have been unknowingly filmed.

Variously (and understandably) dubbed “creepy” or even “pervert glasses”, they have already been used to create endless online videos in which men have covertly filmed women in workplaces, at gyms and beaches or on the street.

Gina Martin, who successfully campaigned to criminalise upskirting in England, is now in Australia campaigning against Kmart’s Anko brand “surveillance glasses” that retail for just $89.

Her petition to have the technology removed from sale has already racked up more than 56,000 signatures.

Martin says Kmart “shouldn’t be selling” these glasses “especially when the law hasn’t caught up to protect people from them”.

Attorney-General Michelle Rowland has asked the privacy commissioner to consider the issue of smart glasses as a priority due to the risks for women and children.

“The government is continuing to work on the next phase of privacy reforms to ensure our … laws are fit for purpose in the digital age,” she says.

But as each day passes, more pairs are sold.

Tanya Plibersek knows the next five-year plan must do more than deal with longstanding failures in policing, housing, courts and services.
