{"id":1031843,"date":"2026-08-29T22:56:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-29T22:56:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1031843\/"},"modified":"2026-08-29T22:56:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-29T22:56:25","slug":"sony-music-warner-sue-anthropic-alleging-a-brazen-campaign-of-intellectual-property-theft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1031843\/","title":{"rendered":"Sony Music, Warner sue Anthropic, alleging a &#8220;brazen campaign&#8221; of intellectual property theft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sony Music Publishing, Warner Chappell and numerous other music publishers have sued Anthropic and co-founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann, alleging the AI lab conducted a \u201cbrazen campaign of illegally torrenting, scraping, and downloading copyrighted works.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lawsuit, which was filed late Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, was first reported by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/now-sony-music-publishing-and-warner-chappell-sue-anthropic-in-multi-billion-dollar-lawsuit-one-of-the-largest-and-most-blatant-ongoing-thefts-of-intellectual-property-in-history\/\" target=\"_blank\">Music Business Worldwide<\/a>. The publishers accuse Anthropic of \u201cblatant theft\u201d by using thousands of copyrighted works to train its AI model Claude. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe disagree with the publishers\u2019 claims and we intend to defend ourselves robustly in court,\u201d an Anthropic spokesperson wrote in an emailed statement sent to TechCrunch. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn\u2019t the first intellectual property lawsuit Anthropic has faced. <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/01\/29\/music-publishers-sue-anthropic-for-3b-over-flagrant-piracy-of-20000-works\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Some of the same lawyers<\/a> behind this lawsuit also represent Concord Music Group and Universal Music Group in a case filed in January and led the <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/08\/26\/anthropic-settles-ai-book-training-lawsuit-with-authors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bartz v. Anthropic<\/a>\u00a0case, in which a group of authors accused Anthropic of using copyrighted works to train products like Claude. Anthropic was ordered to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/07\/20\/anthropics-landmark-1-5b-copyright-settlement-is-approved\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pay $1.5 billion<\/a> in the landmark Bartz case after a judge ruled that while it was legal for the AI lab to use copyrighted works, it was not legal to acquire that content through piracy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the cases make similar arguments, there are key differences.
