DAVIDSON, N.C. \u2014<\/strong><\/p>\nUpdate<\/strong><\/p>\n The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is sharing more details of possible exposures after baby goats at a petting zoo in Iredell County tested positive for rabies.<\/p>\n NCDHHS officials say their agency and the state’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services were first notified about the potential rabies exposure of four baby goats at Farm Adventures in Harmony, North Carolina, on Aug. 27.<\/p>\n The agency stated that the goats were most likely exposed to the deadly disease by a skunk that entered into their pen sometime in late July. Officials say the NC State Laboratory of Public Health confirmed the rabies virus was found in three of the baby goats Aug. 29. A fourth wasn’t tested, but officials assume it’s also been infected.<\/p>\n Officials with NCDHHS and NCDA&CS have been working with the farm and local health departments to gather more data about any potential exposure dates and locations. They say no other animals on the farm were at risk of rabies exposure to people.<\/p>\n Anyone who is believed to have had contact with the baby goats at the farm Adventures mobile petting zoo location in Harmony, North Carolina, or at another off-site event between July 28 and Aug. 27 should call their local health department to see what medications are needed to prevent an infection.<\/p>\n Known potential exposure dates and locations include: <\/p>\n NCDHHS says public health officials are working with the events’ organizers to locate and notify attendees who might have come into contact with the infected goats. At this time, the investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n Rabies is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal.
