{"id":1032201,"date":"2026-08-30T03:01:26","date_gmt":"2026-08-30T03:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1032201\/"},"modified":"2026-08-30T03:01:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-30T03:01:26","slug":"venice-film-festival-scraps-jury-press-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1032201\/","title":{"rendered":"Venice Film Festival Scraps Jury Press Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/venice\/\" id=\"auto-tag_venice\" data-tag=\"venice\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venice<\/a> Film Festival has taken the unusual step of scrapping its main jury press conference this year, we can reveal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe festival, which gets underway next week, hasn\u2019t made a public statement to confirm the break from protocol but confirmed the move to us after multiple requests to know if it was going ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe move comes at a time of highly charged press conferences at A-list festivals with jurors and talent being quizzed by journalists repeatedly about global politics, especially the Israel-Gaza war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe festival denied that the move was made with those considerations in mind and said instead it was a result of a \u201cscheduling conflict\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThis year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/venice-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_venice-film-festival\" data-tag=\"venice-film-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venice Film Festival<\/a> international jury is headed by Maggie Gyllenhaal with members comprising Tunisian director and screenwriter\u00a0Kaouther Ben Hania, the English composer and artist\u00a0Daniel Blumberg, the Italian professor\u00a0Francesco Casetti, the French director and screenwriter\u00a0Xavier Giannoli, the Afghan director and screenwriter\u00a0Shahrbanoo Sadat, and the Hong Kong director and producer\u00a0Johnnie To.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBen Hania was at the festival last year with acclaimed drama The Voice Of Hind Rajab, about the tragic killing of five-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAt last year\u2019s Venice jury press conference,<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/08\/alexander-payne-gaza-venice-film-festival-1236498674\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/08\/alexander-payne-gaza-venice-film-festival-1236498674\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> jury head Alexander Payne admitted he was \u201cunprepared\u201d<\/a> to answer questions about Gaza as political issues dominated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThis year\u2019s Berlin Film Festival was a highly charged edition with the opening jury press conference proving to be a flashpoint after jury president Wim Wenders said filmmakers should stay out of politics in answer to a question on the Israel-Palestine conflict. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe festival<a data-id=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/02\/berlin-film-festival-defends-jury-wim-wenders-backlash-1236725060\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/02\/berlin-film-festival-defends-jury-wim-wenders-backlash-1236725060\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a>had<a data-id=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/02\/berlin-film-festival-defends-jury-wim-wenders-backlash-1236725060\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/02\/berlin-film-festival-defends-jury-wim-wenders-backlash-1236725060\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> to publicly defend<\/a> jury members and call for a different approach to press conferences following them being dominated by questions about politics. The subject of censorship was brought up by press at this year\u2019s Cannes jury presser and dominated column inches for the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThis year\u2019s Venice festival is already shaping up to include a large dose of politics with the addition of Israel-Gaza doc NAZA and the inclusion of Russian film DAU.
